A photocurable sheet-form material which comprises (a) a polymerizable unsaturated monomer, (b) a polymer which is either polymethyl methacrylate or a high-molecular polymer consisting mainly methyl methacrylate units and which is compatible or swollen with the polymer (a), (c) a photocuring agent, and (d) a fibrous reinforcement. It is excellent in productivity, handleability, and photocurability. This photocurable sheet-form material is usable for producing a layered molding and forming a backup layer (reinforcing layers) of a molded article, and is a useful material as a replacement protective material for pipes, covering material, lining material, fixing material, or the like.

Sheet-form photocurable material

A sheet-like photocurable resin compound can secure or control a sufficient application time outdoors where the compound is irradiated with natural light and can suppress volatilization of a styrene monomer. This sheet-like photocurable resin compound comprises a photocurable resin compound (i) containing as an essential component at least one unsaturated resin (A) selected from the group consisting of unsaturated polyester resin, vinyl ester resin, vinyl urethane resin, and acrylic resin, a photopolymerization initiator (B) which is not activated by irradiation with light with a wavelength of 420 nm or above, and a thickener (C) containing a thermnoplastic resin powder as an active component; and a see-through light absorbing film (ii) whose transmittance to light with a wavelength of 420 nm or below is 10% or less; said photocurable resin compound being covered with said see-through absorbing film.

Photocurable resin compound and method of curing the same

The production is described of unsaturated polyesters, which exclusively contain maleate groups in their main chain, by the ring-opening polymerization of epoxides, such as glycidyl ethers, glycidyl esters and olefine epoxides, with &agr;,&bgr;-unsaturated anhydrides, preferably such as maleic anhydride, both on their own and in admixture with other cyclic anydrides, in the presence of a Zn carboxylate. The polyesters which are thus produced are characterized by high molecular weights and a narrow molecular weight distribution. Polymerization can be effected between 50 and 120&deg; C., but is preferably effected between 60 and 90&deg; C., either in the melt or in a solvent. Unsaturated reactive thinners, which after the addition of suitable radical initiators react thermally or photochemically with the polyesters to form lacquers, cast parts or fiber-reinforced composite materials, can also be employed as solvents. The preferred crosslinking agents for the polyesters are mono- and polyfunctional acrylates, methacrylates, vinyl ethers and vinyl esters. The polyesters can also be completely or partially isomerized, either thermally or by catalysis, to form polyesters which comprised fumarate groups in their main chain.
