An image picking-up and processing apparatus particularly suitable for use in dental treatment comprises a transmission and conversion section including an image sensor for detecting input light from an object, an objective lens, and a light guide for transmitting illumination light; a control section including a control unit for producing an image signal on the basis of an output signal from the image sensor, and a light source for emitting the illumination light; and an interchangeable image processing section detachably connected to the transmission and conversion section for processing the image signal to reproduce image information in a desired form. An interchangeable image picking-up section, for example, an endoscope including an objective lens, an image fiber for transmitting the input light, and a light guide for transmitting the illumination light is detachably connected to the transmission and conversion section.

A contra angle handpiece of this invention employs a laser beam transmitting glass fiber for dental treatment in such a manner that the transmission of the beam is carried out not by a reflecting mirror, but by a glass fiber centripetally held with respect to the handpiece by means of resilient grip members. As a result, the disadvantages of the prior art such as reflection factor reduction and reflection angle changes, which result from the use of a reflecting mirror in a contra angle dental handpiece, are eliminated.

A dental diagnostic device is disclosed, wherein the mandibular motion is created as that which results from synthesis of three-dimensional motions of three points to be measured. It is converted into movement of three reference points for reproduction corresponding to the individual points to be measured and the motion resulting from synthesis of the three-dimensional motions at the respective reference points for reproduction is reproduced in or by the use of the mandibular model. Hence no approximate computing processing or the like is needed, there is no room for errors except those in the measuring and reproducing systems and theoretically it is possible to reproduce with a high precision the patient's mandibular motion by the use of a three-dimensional model of the mandible.
