The ethylene copolymer has M/Min the range of not less than 14.0; gpcBR in the range of from 0.20 to 0.80; and strain hardening modulus &#x3c;Gp&#x3e; in the range of not less than 53.4.

A novel olefin-based polymer has excellent thermal resistance, as well as excellent balance among various properties. The olefin-based polymer is an olefin-based polymer comprising 50 to 100% by weight of a constituent unit derived from 4-methyl-1-pentene, and 0 to 50% by weight of a constituent unit derived from at least one olefin selected from olefins having 2 to 20 carbon atoms except 4-methyl-1-pentene, and having the following properties: i) the diad isotacticity is 70% or greater, ii) the ratio (Mw/Mn) of the weight average molecular weight (Mw) to the number average molecular weight (Mn) as measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) is in the range of 1.0 to 3.5, and iii) the intrinsic viscosity [&#x3b7;] is 0.5 (dl/g) or greater.

The present invention provides ethylene polymers capable of preparing various molded articles such as films, sheets or the like, and having excellent moldability, particularly excellent high-speed moldability. The ethylene polymers of the present invention have a density and molecular weight distribution in specific ranges. The first ethylene polymer is characterized by having (C) a ratio (MFR/MFR) of a melt flow rate (MFR) at 190&#xb0; C. under a load of 10 Kg to a melt flow rate (MFR) at 190&#xb0; C. under a load of 2.16 Kg of from 16.2 to 50. The second ethylene polymer is characterized by having (C) a ratio (MFR/MFR) from 12 to 50. The third ethylene polymer is characterized by having (D) a relation of &#x3c9;2/&#x3c9;1&#x2267;18 where &#x3c9;1 and &#x3c9;2 denote angular velocity (rad/sec) when complex elastic modulus G* (dyne/cm) at 200&#xb0; C. is 5.0&#xd7;10dyne/cmand 2.0&#xd7;10dyne/cm, respectively, which are determined by measurement of the angular velocity dependence of the complex elastic modulus of the copolymer.

The present invention provides an olefin polymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution and a specific molecular weight, an olefin polymer having a functional group introduced at the terminal, a tapered polymer containing a segment wherein monomer composition continuously changes in the polymer chain, an olefin polymer having different segments which are bonded to each other, and a process for preparing these polymers. The olefin polymers of the invention are polymers of olefins of 2 to 20 carbon atoms and have a number-average molecular weight of not less than 500 and Mw/Mn of not more than 1.5. In the process for preparing an olefin polymer, an olefin of 2 to 20 carbon atoms is polymerized in the presence of an olefin polymerization catalyst comprising a transition metal compound represented by, for example, the following formula (I):LMX&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)wherein M is a transition metal atom of Group 3 to Group 11 of the periodic table, m is 1 to 5, n is a number satisfying a valence of M, L is a ligand coordinated to the central metal M and is a ligand containing a heteroatom having no direct bond to the central metal, and X is a halogen atom, a hydrocarbon group or the like.

The present invention provides an olefin block copolymer for a viscosity index improver capable of preparing a lubricating oil composition having excellent low temperature properties and excellent balance between viscosity and shear stability, a viscosity index improver and a lubricating oil composition comprising the viscosity index improver. The olefin block copolymer has a Mw/Mn of not more than 1.5, and comprises: (i) a polymer block comprising ethylene and an &#x3b1;-olefin of 3 to 20 carbon atoms, having a molar ratio (ethylene/&#x3b1;-olefin) of ethylene units to &#x3b1;-olefin units of from 20/80 to 65/35, a Mw of 50,000 to 2,000,000, and having a slope of an intramolecular composition distribution of absolute value of 0.1 to 0, and (ii) a polymer block comprising ethylene and an &#x3b1;-olefin of 3 to 20 carbon atoms, having a molar ratio (ethylene/&#x3b1;-olefin) of ethylene units to &#x3b1;-olefin units of from 70/30 to 85/15, a Mw of 10,000 to 400,000, and having a slope of an intramolecular composition distribution of absolute value of 0.1 to 0.

Olefin block copolymer, viscosity index improver for lubricating oils and lubricating oil composition

The present invention relates to a polymer having a melt tension (MT (g)) substantially the same as or lower than that of a conventional polymer which is substantially the same as the polymer in the recurring unit of the main skeleton, the molecular weight, the molecular weight distribution and the crystallinity, and having a flow activation energy (Ea (KJ/mol)) larger than a value obtained by adding 5 KJ/mol to the Ea value of the conventional polymer. A preferred example of the polymer is a branched polyolefin comprising 50 to 100% by mol of recurring units derived from ethylene and 0 to 50% by mol of recurring units derived from an &#x3b1;-olefin of 3 to 20 carbon atoms and having the following properties: the flow activation energy (Ea (KJ/mol)) and the &#x3b1;-olefin content (C (% by weight)) satisfy a specific relation, and the melt tension (MT (g)) and the melt flow rate (MFR (g/10 min)) satisfy a specific relation. This branched polyolefin is excellent in moldability and mechanical strength.

A novel olefin polymerization catalyst is provided which comprises (A) a transition metal compound or lanthanoid compound containing two or more atoms selected from the group consisting of boron, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur, and selenium; and (B) a Lewis acid. A process for producing an olefin polymer is also provided. The catalyst has a high olefin polymerization activity without a combined use of an expensive organoaluminum oxy-compound or organoboron compound, and can maintain the high activity for a long polymerization time.

The present invention is intended to provide a branched polyolefin having various excellent properties, a process for preparing the branched polyolefin and a thermoplastic resin composition containing the branched polyolefin. This branched polyolefin comprises an olefin chain (A) and olefin chain(s) (B) which have recurring units obtained from at least one olefin as main constituent units. In the branched polyolefin, the olefin chain (B) is linked to a position other than both ends of the olefin chain (A), and at least one olefin chain (B) per one olefin chain (A) is present. The process for preparing a branched polyolefin comprises allowing a functional group-containing polyolefin (C) having one or more carboxyl groups and/or acid anhydride groups at positions other than both ends to react with a terminal modified polyolefin (D) having a group capable of reacting with a carboxyl group or an acid anhydride group at only the position of chain end.

This invention provides a solid titanium catalyst component which comprises magnesium, titanium, halogen and an electron donor, is free from elimination of titanium when washed with hexane at room temperature, and has a titanium content decrease ratio of less than 15 % by weight when washed with o-dichlorobenzene at 90&deg; C. The catalyst component can be prepared by a process wherein solid titanium (i) which is free from elimination of titanium when washed with hexane at room temperature is contacted with a polar compound having a dipole moment of 0.50 to 4.00 Debye to decrease the titanium content by at least 25 % by weight, whereby a solid titanium catalyst component having a weight ratio of an electron donor to titanium of at least 6 is prepared. Olefin polymerization catalyst containing the solid titanium catalyst component can be used for (co)polymerization of olefins with high activity to obtain a polyolefin of high stereoregularity in decreased quantities of a low stereoregular polyolefin.
