An exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine is provided. The exhaust emission control system () includes a monolith catalyst (MC) that includes an oxygen storage agent and a noble metal-based three-way catalyst including Pd, Rh, and Pt disposed at an upstream location in the exhaust gas flow in the internal combustion engine (), and a perovskite-type double oxide having a three-way catalytic function disposed at a downstream location in the exhaust gas flow. The amount C1 of Pd carried is 0.97 g/L&#x2266;C1&#x2266;1.68 g/L, the amount C2 of Rh carried is 0.11 g/L&#x2266;C2&#x2266;0.2 g/L, the amount C3 of Pt carried is 0.06 g/L&#x2266;C3&#x2266;0.11 g/L, the amount C4 of the oxygen storage agent carried is 25 g/L&#x2266;C4&#x2266;75 g/L, and the amount C5 of the perovskite-type double oxide carried is 5 g/L&#x2266;C5&#x2266;15 g/L. It is thereby possible to provide an exhaust emission control system that can reduce the production cost by reducing the amount of noble metal-based three-way catalyst used and at the same time can maintain a high exhaust emission control rate.

Device for clarifying exhaust gas from internal combustion engine

It is an object of the present invention to provide an exhaust gas purifying system for an internal combustion engine in which the rise of the temperature of an HC adsorbent is adequately retarded to improve the purification of HC at the start of the engine. In an exhaust system of the internal combustion engine, there are provided a three-way catalyst provided in the downstream side of an exhaust manifold, an adsorbent-catalyst provided under the floor of an automotive vehicle and containing at least zeolite in its composition, and a catalyst provided in the downstream side of the adsorbent-catalyst. In particular, the heat capacity of an exhaust gas passage which connects between the three-way catalyst and the adsorbent-catalyst is increased greater than the heat capacity of the exhaust manifold. More particularly, the thickness of a wall of the exhaust gas passage is greater than that of the exhaust manifold. A substrate, a partition, or a muffler is provided across the exhaust gas passage. The exhaust tube in the exhaust gas passage has at least an inner side or an outer side thereof shaped to a convex and concave configuration.

In an exhaust system of the internal combustion engine, there are provided, in this order from upstream, a three-way catalyst, an adsorbent-catalyst containing at least zeolite in its composition and capable of absorbing hydrocarbons, an electrically heated catalyst containing at least platinum in its composition, and a catalyst containing at least palladium in its composition. The electrically heated catalyst can effectively purify low boiling-point HC of paraffinic hydrocarbon which has been desorbed from the adsorbent-catalyst after about 20 seconds from the start of the engine. On the other hand, the catalyst can effectively purify high boiling-point HC of aromatic hydrocarbon which has been desorbed from the adsorbent-catalyst after about 80 seconds from the start of the engine. When the catalyst is an electrically heated catalyst, it is energized after the energization of the other electrically heated catalyst is ended and the supply of electric power can hence be minimized.

A bottom washcoat layer 2 and a top washcoat layer 3 including alumina (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3) are sequentially laminated onto the surface of a monolith carrier 1. Cerium, zirconium and palladium are carried in the bottom washcoat layer 2, and platinum, rhodium, barium and cerium are carried in the top washcoat layer 3. The cerium content in the top washcoat layer 3 is set smaller than that in the bottom washcoat layer 2. This causes the hydrocarbon conversion performance of rhodium and the nitrogen conversion performance of platinum in the top washcoat layer 3 to be balanced properly, while maintaining the hydrocarbon conversion performance of palladium in the bottom washcoat layer, thereby providing an improved exhaust gas purification performance as a whole. In addition, platinum and palladium carried in separate washcoat layers make it possible to inhibit the formation of a platinum-palladium alloy under high temperature conditions to prevent a reduction in exhaust gas purification effect. Further, the heat deterioration of cerium can be inhibited by zirconium, and the alumina surface area can be stabilized by barium, thereby providing an improved durability of the catalyst under high temperature conditions.

An exhaust emission control device includes an HC convening first catalytic converter mounted in close proximity to an engine, and an HC converting second catalytic converter connected to the first catalytic converter through an exhaust pipe. A time point of starting of HC conversion by the second catalytic converter is set between a time point of completion of HC adsorption in the second catalytic converter and a time point of completion of HC desorption from the second catalytic converter. Thus, it is possible to reduce the amount of HC desorbed.
