Provided are a substrate that can exert an anchoring force causing liquid crystal molecules to be vertically aligned and a liquid crystal display device. The substrate of the present invention is to be used in contact with a liquid crystal composition containing liquid crystal molecules and an alignment aid having a polar group and having the function of causing the liquid crystal molecules to be aligned spontaneously. The substrate includes an insulating film having a contact surface to be in contact with the liquid crystal composition. The static contact angle of water on the contact surface at 25&#xb0; C. is 70&#xb0; or less and/or the surface free energy of the contact surface is 50 mN/m or more. The substrate is preferably a substrate in direct contact with the liquid crystal composition with no alignment film therebetween.

A liquid crystal composition of the present invention is used for a liquid crystal display device of an active matrix driving method, which requires fast response. The liquid crystal composition has negative dielectric anisotropy and a large absolute value thereof, and low viscosity. The liquid crystal composition is chemically stable to heat, light, water, and the like, and is suitable as a liquid crystal composition capable of low-voltage driving and practicable and having high reliability. A liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition can be preferably used for a liquid crystal display device of a VA mode, a PASV mode, a PSA mode, or the like.

A liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound according to the present invention is used in a liquid crystal display element in which a liquid crystal alignment capability is provided through polymerization. The liquid crystal composition contains a polymerizable compound that polymerizes without a photopolymerization initiator or with an extremely small amount of photopolymerization initiator. Therefore, the alignment properties after the polymerization become more stable and the display characteristics do not degrade. Thus, the polymerizable compound is suitable as a practical component of the liquid crystal composition. A liquid crystal display element that uses the liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound according to the present invention can be suitably used for VA and IPS liquid crystal display elements.

A liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound according to the present invention is used in a liquid crystal display element to which a liquid crystal alignment capability is provided by polymerization. The composition contains a polymerizable compound that polymerizes without a photopolymerization initiator or with only an extremely small amount of photopolymerization initiator. Therefore, the alignment after the polymerization becomes more stable and the display characteristics do not degrade. Thus, the polymerizable compound is suitable as a practical component of the liquid crystal composition. A liquid crystal display element that uses the liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound according to the present invention can be suitably used for VA and IPS liquid crystal display elements.
