Optical connector and method of and setting projection length of optical fiber

The invention is directed to an optical connector in which a length of an optical fiber 5 projects from a connection end surface (16) of a ferrule (1) is accurately set, a method of and a fixture for setting the projection length of the optical fiber. A recess surface (33) is formed in a ferrule receiving surface (32). A depth of the recess surface (33) is equal to a length an optical fiber (5) projects from the connection end surface (16) of the ferrule (1). The ferrule (1) is held by ferrule holding members (35a) and (35b), so that the ferrule (1) is abutted against the ferrule receiving surface (32) by the urging force of compression springs (36). Through the ferrule (1), an optical fiber cored line (3) is projected from the connection end surface (16) of the ferrule (1) and abutted against the recess surface (33). Optical connector and method of and fixture for setting projection

A composite optical device has a first and second chips. The first chip has a substrate on which M pieces of optical waveguides for transmitting communication light, N pieces of optical waveguides for transmitting monitoring light and M-input/N-output star couplers are formed in an integrated form, and the second chip has a substrate on which N pieces of optical waveguides for transmitting communication light, N pieces of optical waveguides for transmitting monitoring light and N pieces of 2-input/2-output star couplers are formed in an integrated form. A first and second blocks holding optical fibers are joined respectively to the first and second chips. When the composite optical device in which the first and second blocks and the first and second chips are joined is incorporated into the optical communication system, a passive double star system is constructed. By using an MT connector instead of the first block and the first chip, a single star system can be rapidly constructed.

An integrated optical waveguide circuit includes a substrate; an optical wavelength multiplexer and an optical power splitter formed on a same surface of the substrate. The optical wavelength multiplexer is composed of a first slab optical waveguide, a second slab optical waveguide, a single or a plurality of input optical waveguides connected to the first slab optical waveguide at one end of the first slab optical waveguide, a plurality of arrayed optical waveguides arranged in parallel and having different lengths and connected to the first slab optical waveguide and the second slab optical waveguide, and a plurality of output optical waveguides arranged in parallel and connected to the second slab optical waveguide. The optical power splitter is composed of the second slab optical waveguide, one or more input optical waveguides, and the plurality of output optical waveguides arranged in parallel and connected to the second slab optical waveguide.

The purpose of the present invention is to provide a time domain reflectometer in which the system cost is low and the dynamic range is wide. In accordance with the present invention, an excitation light source for generating continuous light of a predetermined frequency (e. g., 1.48 .mu.m), and a ring laser part for generating a high power light pulse in accordance with the continuous light are provided. A light branch device is held in common by the ring laser part and a measurement part. The light branch device makes the light pulse which has been incident on one of its end parts to be incident on a light cable to be measured; and the light branch device also receives response light and supplies the response light to a light receptor in the measurement part. In the measurement part, the response light is converted to a corresponding electric signal and the signal is amplified to be supplied to a measurement circuit.
