A water-insoluble cutting fluid base oil or grinding fluid base oil for metalworking includes a fatty acid polyoxyalkylene alkyl ether represented by the following formula (I-A), wherein a hydroxyl value of the fatty acid polyoxyalkylene alkyl ether is less than or equal to 2.0 mgKOH/g.R&#x2014;CO-(OA)-OR&#x2003;&#x2003;(I-A)(In the formula (I-A), Rrepresents a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated monovalent hydrocarbon group having 15 to 21 carbon atoms and Rrepresents a linear, branched, or cyclic monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms. In addition, A represents an alkylene group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms, OA represents alkylene oxide, and n represents 1 to 6 which is an average mole number of added alkylene oxide (AO)).

Metalworking fluid base oil

The present invention provides an alkoxylation solid catalyst with which an alkylene oxide adduct having a narrow adduct distribution can be produced while inhibiting formation of high molecular weight polyalkylene glycol having a molecular weight of about tens of thousands as a by-product. The alkoxylation catalyst comprises a metal oxide containing magnesium, aluminum, and at least one metal selected from the metals that belong to group VIA, group VIIA, and group VIII as a third component. The third component metal changes the structure of the active site in the catalyst, for example, by forming a metal oxide having a spinel-type structure with aluminum (e.g. when the third component metal is Mn, MnAl O is formed), so that a side reaction of forming a high molecular weight polyalkylene glycol is inhibited.
