It is an object to provide a drive unit capable of properly responding to an access request from a microprocessor side and an access request from a display section side, and further of realizing a high-speed operation and a low power consumption operation. When an MPU access request from an MPU side and an LCD access request from an LCD side take place, an arbitration circuit (160) makes arbitration to start an access operation to a RAM (100) according to one of the access requests. Additionally, a memory access monitor signal /BUSY for monitoring an access state to the RAM is outputted to an external terminal to be inputted to a hardware wait control terminal of the MPU. The arbitration circuit starts the access operation on condition that a RAM precharge operation reaches completion. The MPU sets a start address and an end address on a column and a page and issues a writing start command, whereupon display data in a display area is rewritten automatically. If a competition occurs between the MPU access request and the LCD access request, the MPU gives the priority to the MPU access request at all times.

A driving method of a display device in which the number of voltage levels of scanning lines during a non-selection period is only one, and the voltage level of a data line corresponding to a display element that presents no image is set to the voltage level of the scanning lines during the non-selection period. The power consumption of the display device is thus reduced. A minimum area of the entire screen of the device is used for image presentation while the remaining area is set to a display-off state (display-off mode) using the above driving method, and thus the power consumption of the display device, for example, in a standby state is reduced. Each of the display-enabled area and the display-off area is flexibly set. A combination of a multi-line driving method and the above driving method helps further reduce power consumption.

A display device is provided having M data lines and N scanning lines arranged in a matrix and forming a plurality of display elements disposed at intersections of the M data and N scanning lines, wherein N and M are each integers greater than 1, for displaying an image. A scanning line drive circuit applies a scanning voltage signal possessing a specified selection voltage pattern simultaneously to n scanning lines from among the N scanning lines, where n is an integer greater than 1 and less than N. First and second frame memory devices accumulate display data representing the image to be displayed, such that reading the display data of a first frame period from the first frame memory device is performed substantially simultaneously with the writing of the display data of a second frame period into the second memory device. A data line drive circuit determines a data voltage signal to be applied to the M data lines in accordance with a comparison between the selection voltage pattern applied by the scanning line drive circuit and the display data read from one of the first and second memory devices. The data line drive circuit also applies the determined data voltage signal to the M data lines.

The objectives of this invention are to improve the method of supplying power from an operating power source and thus implement a liquid crystal drive device with an internal display data storage device that consumes less power and is also larger. A signal electrode drive circuit (X driver) is made up of a low-voltage-amplitude operating portion that operates on the supply of a first power voltage group, and a high-voltage-amplitude operating portion that operates on the supply of a second power voltage group. A frame memory that stores display data is provided in the high-voltage-amplitude operating portion, with the configuration being such that the operating power source for the frame memory is supplied from the second power voltage group. The power source of the frame memory could also be supplied through a constant-voltage circuit that regulates these second power voltages, and the supply of the first and second power voltages could be switched in accordance with the state of the second power voltage supply by a power monitoring device that monitors the second power voltage group. The configuration of the present invention is particularly effective for the multiple line selection drive method.

The mounting portion has an opening for allow key operations of the card mounted in the mounting portion. The connection unit disconnects the connected call connection line if the portable device is unmounted during reception of the information. A communication apparatus has a telephone set and a data communication unit integral or combined with the telephone set and is capable of sending a call through dialing means of the telephone set. The communication apparatus comprises switching means for selectively connecting a telephone line to a line of the telephone set or a line of the data communication unit and detection means connected to the telephone set for detecting a predetermined protocol signal sent back from a destination station. Control means controls the switching means such that the switching means connects the telephone line to the telephone set at the time of calling to enable dialing using the dialing means of the telephone set, and switches the telephone line to the data communication unit when the detection means detects the protocol signal, in order to start data communication.
