Cables having non-stripping, or buffer-free, optical fibers are disclosed. The cables each have a buffer-free optical fiber including a core, cladding layer and a thin protective coating enclosing the cladding and having an overall diameter of 125 &#x3bc;m. This protective coating protects the cladding and core from moisture and provides structural integrity to prevent physical damage to the fiber during installation and termination with connectors. Embodiments of this non-stripping fiber do not require removal of a buffer layer during field termination so connections can be formed using simple cleaving techniques. As such, the field termination process for embodiments is simplified compared with conventional approaches.

Cable with non-stripping optical fiber

Optical signals are transmitted across a rotary junction using an active optical rotary coupler. A rotary optical joint assembly includes a rotatable optical coupler and an optical signal processing system. The rotatable optical coupler aligns two optical fibers for optical communication across a rotary optical junction. The optical signal processing system includes a local optical transceiver that receives the signals and compensates for at least a portion of signal loss or other signal imperfections incurred from transmitting the signal across the rotary optical junction. The local optical transceiver also processes the signals for longer distance transmission.

Active optical rotary coupler

A structure for optical fiber with single layer coating suitable for field termination process is provided, including a glass core, a cladding layer, and a permanent coating protective layer. The thickness of the permanent coating ranges preferably from about 4 um to 8 um, and remains on the optical fiber during the field termination process to provide protection to the optical fiber after the buffer layer is striped off. In addition, the optical fiber structure of the present invention still conforms to the specification of the standard optical fiber. The optical fiber of the structure according to the present invention can simplify the field termination process so that the quality efficiency of the deployment is improved.

Optical fiber with single layer coating for field termination

A universal remote control device controls both first and second electronic devices that may be remote from each other, via different communication channels. The remote control device is used with an optical fiber network, including a first optical transceiver coupled to the first electronic device, a second optical transceiver coupled to the second electronic device, and an optical fiber coupled between the first optical transceiver and the second optical transceiver. The remote control device comprises an infrared (IR) transmitter for transmitting a first control signal for controlling the first electronic device via an IR communication channel, and a wireless communication interface for transmitting a second control signal for controlling the second electronic device to the first optical transceiver via a wireless communication channel. The second control signal is further transmitted from the first optical transceiver to the second electronic device via the optical fiber and the second optical transceiver.

Universal remote control device

A flexible framing format and implementation scheme for transmitting uncompressed video data selected from a group of various video formats, audio data and control data over a single serial communication channel at a fixed clock rate, thereby eliminating the need for transmitting a pixel clock signal. The data is transmitted over the single communication channel in packets and recreated at the destination side. Blank pixels of the video data are completely suppressed so that only active pixels are transmitted over the single communication channel, thereby reducing communication bandwidth requirement of the channel.

HDCP data transmission over a single communication channel

A grating assisted optical waveguide for use in free space optical detection is disclosed. High speed, high sensitivity, large field of view, and relaxed tolerance on alignment are enabled. The grating converts a free space incoming optical beam into guided mode. Converted optical signals propagate along the waveguide, and can be directed to an optical detector. As such, the optical intensity at the active area of the detector is increased significantly. A number of optical beam converter gratings for free space light collection can be used, including linear and ring structure gratings, chirped gratings, and multilayer gratings. Such a grating assisted optical waveguide can be used, for example, in a digital wireless multimedia system, where digital content is wirelessly transmitted from a source to a target destination, such as home-based video and audio entertainment systems.

High speed free space optical detection with grating assisted waveguide

Embodiments provide single fiber bidirectional HDCP modules. A signal fiber module includes at least one laser and at least one detector and a waveguide combiner/splitter. An optical fiber is used as a cylindrical lens in order to partially collimate in the vertical axis the optical signals entering and leaving branches of a waveguide. The branches of the waveguide have lens-shape interfaces in order to at least partially collimate in the horizontal axis the beams entering and leaving the waveguide. Each branch of the waveguide tapers toward a join-section of the waveguide. At the join section, the cross-section of a laser branch is smaller than the cross-section of a detector branch. If more than one detector is present in a module, the cross-sections of the detector branches differ from each other. If more than one laser is present in a module, the cross-sections of the laser branches differ from each other.

Bidirectional HDCP module using single optical fiber and waveguide combiner/splitter

A serial transmission protocol and architecture are provided that can be used to transmit uncompressed multimedia (e.g., video/audio/control data) over a high speed serial forward communication channel. A backward channel is also provided, for communicating control data. The protocol is implemented with a flexible packet format that supports all different modes of video data, and also supports 24 bit and 30 bit video data (or higher). An example application where the architecture and protocol can be used is a home entertainment multimedia system. A mechanism to implement EDID pass-through and protocols such as HDCP is also provided.

Protocol for uncompressed multimedia data transmission

A laser head comprising a tube having a wall with the configuration of a hollow cylinder. A first ring flange extends radially generally outwardly of the tube wall at one end and is connected to the tube by a single continuous weld. A second plate flange is disposed at the same end and extends generally axially of the first flange. The first flange is coupled to the second flange and sandwiches a metal gasket therebetween to form a pressure seal. An electrode assembly is mounted to the second plate flange and at least one high voltage discharge feed extends through the wall of the tube to energize the electrode assembly. The tube is formed of a homogeneous metal that is free of any surface plating and is less reactive with Halogen gas than pure aluminum. In an associated method, the interior surface of the tube is polished to reduce the surface area and inhibit the entrapment of water vapor.
