A method for providing energy assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) heads are described. The method and system include providing a substrate, at least one EAMR transducer, an overcoat layer and at least one laser. The substrate has a leading edge and a substrate trailing edge. The EAMR transducer(s) reside in a device layer and on the substrate trailing edge. The overcoat layer includes a plurality of contacts. The device layer is between the overcoat layer and the substrate trailing edge. The laser(s) provide energy to the EAMR transducer. The overcoat layer is between the substrate trailing edge and the laser(s). The laser(s) are electrically coupled to at least a first portion of the contacts. The contacts provide thermal connection through the overcoat layer and through the device layer to the substrate. At least a second portion of the contacts is electrically insulated from the substrate.

Method for providing an energy assisted magnetic recording head having a laser integrally mounted to the slider

A magnetic recording media is disclosed. The media comprises a substrate, a recording layer disposed over the substrate, and a metallic layer disposed between the recording layer and the substrate. The recording layer is configured to receive an electromagnetic radiation, absorb a first portion of the electromagnetic radiation, and transmit a second portion of the electromagnetic radiation. The metallic layer comprises a non-magnetic metal and configured to reflect at least some of the second portion of the electromagnetic radiation towards the recording layer.

Systems and methods for increasing media absorption efficiency using interferometric waveguides in information storage devices are described. One such system for an interferometric waveguide assembly includes a light source, a first waveguide arm and a second waveguide arm, a splitter configured to receive light from the light source and to split the light into the first waveguide arm and the second waveguide arm, and a near field transducer (NFT) configured to receive the light from the first waveguide arm and the second waveguide arm, where the first waveguide arm and the second waveguide arm converge to form a preselected angle at a junction about opposite the splitter, and where the first waveguide arm and the second waveguide arm are configured to induce a preselected phase difference in the light arriving at the NFT.

Systems and methods for increasing media absorption efficiency using interferometric waveguides

Devices having reflective grating structures and methods of fabricating the same are disclosed. A bottom clad layer is disposed above a substrate. A waveguide core layer is disposed above the bottom clad layer. A top clad layer is disposed above the waveguide core layer. At least one metal grating structure is disposed adjacent to an interface between the waveguide core layer and one of the bottom clad layer and the top clad layer, where the at least one metal grating structure is configured to reflect at least a portion of an incident electromagnetic radiation coupled into the waveguide core layer.

The DFB laser(s) each includes a plurality of quantum wells, a laser coupling grating, at least one reflector, and a cavity in the at least one DFB laser. The DFB laser(s) for providing energy to the media. The EAMR transducer(s) includes at least one waveguide, a write pole, at least one coil for energizing the write pole, at least one grating, and may include a near-field transducer. The grating(s) include a coupling grating for coupling the energy from the at least one DFB laser to the waveguide(s). The waveguide(s) direct the energy from the at least one grating toward the ABS.

Method and system for providing energy assisted magnetic recording disk drive using a distributed feedback laser

A method and system for providing an energy assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) head are described. The EAMR head includes a laser, a slider, and an EAMR transducer. The laser has a main emitter and at least one alignment emitter. The slider includes at least one alignment waveguide, at least one output device, and an air-bearing surface (ABS). The alignment waveguide(s) are aligned with the alignment emitter(s). The EAMR transducer is coupled with the slider and includes a waveguide aligned with main emitter. The waveguide is for directing energy from the main emitter toward the ABS.

Method and system for optically coupling a laser with a transducer in an energy assisted magnetic recording disk drive

A method and system for providing a waveguide for an energy assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) transducer is described. The EAMR transducer has an air-bearing surface (ABS) that resides in proximity to a media during use and is coupled with a laser that provides energy. The EAMR transducer includes a write pole that writes to a region of the media and coil(s) that energize the write pole. The waveguide includes first and second cladding layers, a core, and assistant cores. The core is configured to direct the energy from the laser toward the ABS and has a core length. The core resides between the first and second cladding layers. A first portion of the assistant cores resides in the first cladding layer. A second portion of the assistant cores is in the second cladding layer. Each assistant core has an assistant core length less than the core length.

A method and system for providing an EAMR transducer is described. The EAMR transducer is coupled with a laser for providing energy and has an ABS that resides near a media during use. The EAMR transducer includes a write pole, coil(s) that energize the pole, a near field transducer (NFT) proximate to the ABS, a waveguide, and a reflector. The write pole has a back gap region and writes to a region of the media. The NFT focuses the energy onto the media. The waveguide directs the energy from the laser toward the NFT at an incident angle with respect to the ABS. A first portion of the energy reflects off of the ABS at a reflected angle. The reflector receives the first portion of the energy from the ABS and reflects a second portion of the energy toward the ABS. The NFT resides between the waveguide and the reflector.

A method and system for providing an EAMR transducer and a waveguide used therein are described. The EAMR transducer is coupled with a laser that provides energy. The EAMR transducer also has an ABS that resides in proximity to a media during use. The EAMR transducer includes a waveguide, a write pole to write to a region of the media, coil(s) for energizing the write pole, and a near field transducer (NFT) proximate to the ABS for focusing the energy onto the media. The waveguide includes a mode shift compensator, first and second cladding layers, and a core between the cladding layers. The core directs energy from the laser toward the ABS and has a core index of refraction. The core is also between the mode shift compensator and the NFT. The mode shift compensator has a mode shift compensator index of refraction less than the core index of refraction.

Method and system for enhancing optical efficiency for an EAMR head

A method and system for providing energy assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) heads are described. The heads include sliders and lasers coupled with the sliders. The method and system include molding an enclosure layer. The enclosure layer has a laser-facing surface and a top surface opposing the laser-facing surface. The laser-facing surface has a cavity including a concave section. The method and system further includes providing a reflective layer on the cavity. A portion of the reflective layer resides on the concave section, collimates light from the laser, and provides the collimated light to the EAMR transducer. The method and system further includes aligning the concave section of the cavity with a light emitting portion of the laser. The enclosure layer is also bonded to the slider.

The optical grating includes a top cladding, a first plurality of discrete ridges forming a first grating, a core, a second plurality of discrete ridges forming a second grating, and a bottom cladding. The first plurality of discrete ridges are spaced apart by a first pitch. The second plurality of discrete ridges are spaced apart by a second pitch. The core has a top side adjacent to at least a portion of the top cladding and a bottom side. The bottom cladding is adjacent to at least a portion of the bottom side of the core. The second grating resides between the bottom cladding and the core.
