A surface-coated cutting tool according to the present invention includes a tool body and a hard coating layer including a complex carbonitride layer containing a small amount of chlorine and (TiZrHf)(NC) (0.10&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.90, 0&#x3c;y&#x2264;1.0, 0.08&#x3c;z&#x3c;0.60), a ZrHf and C content ratios in cycles, a cycle distance between a maximum ZrHf content point and an adjacent minimum ZrHf content point and a cycle distance between a maximum C content point and an adjacent minimum C content point are 5 to 100 nm, an average value of content ratio differences &#x394;x and &#x394;z is 0.02 or more, a distance between the maximum ZrHf content point and the maximum C content point is &#x2155; or less of the distance between a maximum content point and a minimum content point of adjacent ZrHf components, and a composition fluctuation structure is 10% or more.

Surface-coated cutting tool in which hard coating layer exhibits exceptional welding resistance, plastic deformation resistance, and anomalous damage resistance

A surface-coated cutting tool in which a hard coating layer exhibits exceptional adhesion resistance and anomalous damage resistance is provided. This surface-coated cutting tool includes a tool body composed of a WC based cemented carbide or a TiCN based cermet; and at least one hard coating layer provided on a surface of the tool body, and; 1) the hard coating layer includes at least one complex nitride layer, 2) the complex nitride layer contains 0.001 to 0.030 atom % of chlorine, 3) in the complex nitride layer, an area ratio of longitudinal crystal grains having an aspect ratio equal to or greater than 2 occupying a longitudinal cross section is 50% or more, and 4) a layer thickness of the complex nitride layer is 0.2 &#x3bc;m to 20 &#x3bc;m.

Surface-coated cutting tool in which hard coating layer exhibits exceptional adhesion resistance and anomalous damage resistance

A surface-coated cutting tool has a hard coating layer including an upper layer &#x3b1;, an adhesion layer &#x3b2;, and a lower layer &#x3b3;. The upper layer &#x3b1; is formed of an &#x3b1;-AlOlayer formed under low temperature conditions. The adhesion layer &#x3b2; includes a TiCN layer having a thickness of 0.5 &#x3bc;m or more in an outermost layer and contains 0.5 to 3 &#x3bc;m to a maximum depth of 0.5 &#x3bc;m toward the inside in a layer thickness direction of the TiCN layer from the interface between the TiCN layer and the upper layer &#x3b1;. The lower layer &#x3b3; is formed of (TiAl)(CN) of a single phase of a NaCl type face-centered cubic structure, in which an average content ratio Xof Al and an average content ratio Yof C in this composition formula satisfy 0.60&#x2264;X&#x2264;0.95 and 0&#x2264;Y&#x2264;0.005.

A surface-coated cutting tool with a hard coating layer exhibits excellent chipping resistance and wear resistance in a high-speed cutting process. The surface-coated cutting tool comprises a lower layer consisting of a titanium compound layer and an upper layer consisting of an aluminum oxide layer deposited on a surface of a tool substrate constituted of a tungsten carbide-based cemented carbide as a hard coating layer. In the upper layer, a (006) plane texture coefficient TC(006) is 1.8 or more, a ratio I(104)/I(110) of a peak intensity I(104) of an (104) plane to a peak intensity I(110) of an (110) plane is in a range of 0.5 to 2.0, and furthermore, an absolute value of a residual stress in the aluminum oxide layer is 100 MPa or less.
