A light emitting device includes: a substrate having a main surface; a phosphor layer provided on the main surface and containing an LED element that emits primary light and a fluorescent particle that absorbs a part of the primary light and emits secondary light; and a transparent resin layer having a refractive index n and covering the phosphor layer. The transparent resin layer has an outer circumferential surface that forms a boundary between the transparent resin layer and the atmosphere. When a minimum circumference that includes the overall phosphor layer and is concentric with the outer circumferential surface has a radius r in a cut surface where at least a part of the outer circumferential surface takes a shape of an arc having a radius R, a relationship of R&#x3e;r&#xb7;n is satisfied. With such configuration, the light extraction efficiency is enhanced.

A light-emitting device includes a light-emitting element, a phosphor layer containing a phosphor that is excited by the light emitted by the light-emitting element to emit fluorescence, a substrate with the light-emitting element and the phosphor layer on the surface, and a resin body that seals the light-emitting element and the phosphor layer. An additional member is provided on an opposite surface opposed to the light-emitting surface of the light-emitting element on the surface of the resin body. The additional member at least reflects or diffuses the light emitted by the light-emitting element and the phosphor layer.

A light emitting device includes: a substrate; a semiconductor light emitting element provided on the substrate; a sealing member which covers the semiconductor light emitting element; and a lens having a plurality of convex parts and a concave part. The light emitting device emits light having a non-concentric luminance distribution made up of a plurality of bright regions and a plurality of dark regions, the non-concentric luminance distribution being observed on a plane which is parallel to the substrate. This makes it possible to provide (i) a display device which has a thin body and hardly causes unevenness in luminance and in chromaticity, and (ii) a light emitting device and (iii) a surface illuminant suitable, which are suitable for use in the display device.

A light emitting device includes: a light emitting element; and a substantially rectangular package body in which the light emitting element is contained and a concave portion is formed. The concave portion has a bottom surface on which the light emitting element is disposed, and is filled with a transparent sealing resin for covering the light emitting element. Further, the sealing resin has a surface serving as an emitting surface, from which light is extracted. The package body includes: a reflection surface being an inclined plane provided along a short side of a depressed region toward the emitting surface, when seen from above the emitting surface; and a die bonding region and a wire bonding region on a bottom surface of the depressed region. Further, the depressed region has a depth being substantially equal to or less than a height of the active layer of the light emitting element.
