A translucent liquid crystal display panel () includes pixel pairs as display units each formed by a left-eye pixel (L) and a right-eye pixel (R) and arranged in a matrix shape. A through hole (Ld) arranged in a color layer (Lc) of a color filter has a slit shape whose longitudinal direction is identical to the orientation direction of a cylindrical lens () constituting a lenticular lens (). Similarly, a through hole (Rd) arranged in a color layer (Rc) of a color filter has a slit shape whose longitudinal direction is identical to the orientation direction of the cylindrical lens () constituting the lenticular lens (). This suppresses the phenomenon that a hue is changed by a field-of-view angle and/or an external light condition on the translucent display panel capable of displaying an image directed to a plurality of viewpoints.

In a three-dimensional image display device for displaying color three-dimensional images, a fly eye lens, a display panel, and a light source are provided in this order from the observer side. A display panel has four pixels arrayed in a (2&#xd7;2) matrix correlated with one lens element of the fly eye lens. An optical member including: a Fresnel lens sheet for deflecting and emitting deflected light, A louver for restricting a direction of light rays, where the louver restricts the traveling direction of incident light from the deflecting element to a direction that is parallel to the optical path of the incident light, and emits the restricted light. The Fresnel lens sheet is disposed so that a machined surface thereof faces the louver.

Optical member, light source apparatus, display apparatus, and terminal apparatus

A planar light source, Fresnel lens sheet, and louver are disposed in the stated order in a light source apparatus. The Fresnel lens sheet deflects and focuses in one dimension light that has entered from the planar light source. The louver is disposed in the optical path of the light emitted from the Fresnel lens sheet, and the directivity of the light can be increased by restricting the traveling direction of the light to the focal direction of the Fresnel lens sheet. The light utilization ratio can thereby be increased, the directivity of planarly emitted light can be increased, and the brightness can be made uniform at the point of observation.

A reflective liquid crystal display panel is a display panel for three-dimensional display in which pixel pairs as display elements composed of one left-eye pixel L and right-eye pixel R each are provided in a matrix. The lenticular lens is an optical member for image separation that is provided to separate the light from the left and right pixels, and numerous lenticular lenses form a lens array that is arranged in one dimension. An anisotropic scattering sheet as an anisotropic scattering element is provided between the lenticular lens and the reflective liquid crystal display panel. In this configuration, a reduction in the quality of the reflective display can be minimized, and improved image quality can be achieved without changing the concavo-convex structure of the reflecting panel and the lens shape of the lenticular lens in display device that is capable of displaying different images to a plurality of viewpoints.

A display device comprising a light source and having an optical waveguide, a louver, an anisotropic scattering sheet, and a transmissive liquid crystal panel disposed along the path of light emitted from the light source. The light-restricting direction of the louver is tilted at an angle &#x3b1; from the Y-axis direction. The value of the angle &#x3b1; is set so that the arrangement direction of moir&#xe9; created between the louver and the liquid crystal panel approaches the X-axis direction. A plurality of belt-shaped convex portions extending in the Y-axis direction are formed on the surface of the anisotropic scattering sheet, and are configured so that the scattering direction of the light has anisotropy. Specifically, scattering in the X-axis direction is increased, and scattering in the Y-axis direction is reduced. Moir&#xe9; can thereby be reduced in a display device having increased directivity of the display.

A light source apparatus has two or more light sources that have different light-emission spectra and that can be controlled independently, and also has light sensors for detecting the quantity of light emitted by the light sources. The light sensors are composed of one type of light sensor that is not provided with a color filter for selecting the wavelength of received light, and the light sensors are sensitive to wavelength ranges that are sufficiently broad to simultaneously receive light in red, green, and blue wavelength ranges. A control circuit controls the two or more light sources to emit light in a time sequential fashion, and compares reference data with the output values of the light sensors to control the quantity of light emitted by the light sources by means of a light source drive circuit. It is thereby possible to reduce the cost and size of a light source apparatus that is capable of correcting changes in hue.

In an image display device where a lenticular lens, a display panel, and a light source are provided in order from a viewer side, when cylindrical lenses of the lenticular lens are arrayed in a horizontal direction, in first-viewpoint pixels and second-viewpoint pixels of the display panel, openings whose sides which intersect with straight lines in the horizontal direction are not parallel to a vertical direction are formed. And, a shape of the openings of a pair of pixels mutually adjacent in the vertical direction is made line-symmetric with respect to edges of the pixels extending in the horizontal direction as an axis.

A light source device has a transparent/scattering state switching element for switching the range of irradiation angles, and liquid crystal molecules and dichroic dye molecules are dispersed in a polymer matrix in the PDLC layer of the transparent/scattering state switching element. The range of irradiation angles can thereby be switched, and the color can be prevented from changing when the radiation angle is switched.

In a display device equipped with a light source device, a second light-guide member is provided to the back surface of a first light-guide member that has an emitted light control sheet provided to the front surface thereof. The emitted light control sheet is composed of a flat plate portion and protrusions. A first light source mounted to a side surface of the first light-guide member, and a second light source mounted to a side surface of a second light-guide member are switched and turned on. The emitted light control sheet has light-condensing effects when the first light source is on, and has diffusing effects when the second light source is turned on. The angle range of illuminating light can thereby be switched.

In an LCD device, a circular polarizer is provided to each of two substrates that hold a liquid crystal layer. The circular polarizer on the display surface side includes a polarizer, &#x3bb;/2 plate in which Rth&#x3e;0, and a &#x3bb;/4 plate in which Rth&#x3c;0; and the circular polarizer on the backlight side includes a polarizer, a &#x3bb;/2 plate in which Rth&#x3c;0, and a &#x3bb;/4 plate in which Rth&#x3e;0. Rth is a retardation in the thickness direction of a &#x3bb;/2 plate or a &#x3bb;/4 plate.
