An automatic renting apparatus is for automatically renting rental articles and restoring returned rental articles. The automatic renting apparatus stores information concerning rental articles that have been rented out, rental articles to supplement or replace the stock, and the scheduled date of replacement or supplement. When the patron subscribes in advance for a rental article, information is displayed on a display unit to enable the patron to select a desired rental article for which the patron desires to make advance subscription. Upon the selection of the desired rental article and a desired renting date by the patron, information concerning the desired rental article and the desired renting date is stored in a subscription information storage unit.

An optical sensor unit for detecting a predetermined object to be detected comprises an optical element, a connector for connection to a wiring cable of an external equipment, and a printed circuit board having a predetermined printed wiring thereon for connecting the optical element to the connector while the optical element is completely sealed by the printed circuit board at the lower end thereof and by the case at the upper portion and sides thereof whereby reduction of quantity of the light emitted from the optical element due to collection of dust can be prevented and whereby the attachment and detachment operations of the optical sensor unit can be effected with ease.

In an optical media monitoring device that detects presence of light-interrupting media between a photoemitter component and a photoreceptor component provided to operate in cooperation with each other, the photoemitter component is driven at a variable level of light emission, and a comparator compares the output of the photoreceptor component with a reference signal which is also variable. The driving means is controlled to cause the photoemitter component to emit a level of light lower than normally used for media detection. Dust degradation of the sensor is determined by checking, in a state of no media present and the reduced light emission of the photoemitter component, whether the output of the photoreceptor component is greater than the reference signal level.

Optical media monitoring device

An IC card includes an integrated circuit composed of a transmitter/receiver, a processor, a memory, and a display controller, a display, and control switches for successively switching data displayed on the display. Desired data stored in the memory can be displayed on the display by a command delivered through the transmitter/receiver or by actuation of the control switches. An IC card reader for reading the IC card includes signal transmitting and receiving circuits for transmitting signals to and receiving signals from the IC card, and a control unit for displaying the stored data on the display of the IC card in dependance upon the processed results.
