An alkyd resin containing ampho-ionic groups of the formula: ##STR1## wherein A is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylene or a phenylene group, is disclosed. Said resin is prepared by reacting a polyol, a polybasic acid and an ampho-ionic compound of the formula: ##STR2## wherein A is as defined above, R.sub.1 is a hydroxyalkyl, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are H or alkyl optionally containing sulfo and/or hydroxyl group.

Ampho-ionic group-containing alkyd resins

A thermosetting resin which is a linear copolymer having a molecular weight of 10,000 to 1,000,000 and a glass transition point of -30.degree. to +80.degree. C., obtained by polymerizing in an aqueous medium a monomer mixture comprising (1) 0.1 to 50% by weight of at least one polymerizable monomer having an ampho-ionic structure, selected from the group consisting of (i) compounds representable by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each, the same or different, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group, A is O or NH, m.sub.1 and n.sub.1 are each, the same or different, an integer of 1 to 12 and X.sup..crclbar. is SO.sub.3.sup..crclbar., SO.sub.4.sup..crclbar. or CO.sub.2.sup..crclbar. and (ii) compounds representable by either one of the formulae: ##STR2## wherein R.sub.4 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R.sub.5 is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl group, m.sub.2 is an integer of 0 to 6 and n.sub.2 is an integer of 1 to 6, and A and X.sup.- are as defined above, (2) 0.5 to 70% by weight of at least one polymerizable monomer containing a reactive amide group, representable by the formula: ##STR3## wherein R.sub.6 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R.sub.7 is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group and (3) 1 to 99.4% by weight of at least one of other polymerizable monomers.

Thermosetting resin and its production

An aqueous solution or dispersion of thermosetting resin comprising a resin, dissolved or dispersed in water in an amount of 5 to 85% by weight, said resin being obtained by solution polymerization of a mixture comprising (1) at least one polymerizable monomer having an amphoteric ion structure, (2) at least one polymerizable monomer containing a carboxyl group and (3) at least one of other polymerizable monomers in a hydrophilic organic solvent and has a number average molecular weight of 1,000 to 30,000 and a glass transition point of -30 to +80.degree. C.
