A method of supervising a complex system includes acquiring and storing failures data and repair resources information regarding the complex system, identifying failure networks and structures of the complex system. Failure types associated with the failure networks of the complex system are determined. The method includes generating a plurality of failure prevention and repair (FPR) sequences, wherein each FPR is associated with the failure networks and the failure types. The generated FPR sequences are analyzed to select a set of FPR sequences and associated repair resources. The method further comprises applying the selected one of the plurality of failure prevention and repair sequences to the complex system, thereby managing the complex system.

Efficient fault prevention and repair in complex systems

Methods for interactively preventing and detecting conflicts and errors (CEs) through prognostics and diagnostics. Centralized and Decentralized Conflict and Error Prevention and Detection (CEPD) Logic is developed for prognostics and diagnostics over three types of real-world constraint networks: random networks (RN), scale-free networks (SFN), and Bose-Einstein condensation networks (BECN). A method is provided for selecting an appropriate CEPD algorithm from a plurality of algorithms having either centralized or decentralized CEPD logic, based on analysis of the characteristics of the CEPD algorithms and the characteristics of the constraint network.

Failure repair sequence generation systems and methods may generate a repair sequence for nodes experiencing failure in a nodal-network-based system that meets acceptable performance metrics, such as acceptable total network damage, acceptable node-failure preventability rate, or a combination thereof.

Systems and methods for preventing and detecting conflicts and errors through prognostics and diagnostics are applied to vehicle traffic in air traffic and ground control scenarios. Conflict and error prevention and detection (CEPD) logic is applied to a constraint network generated to model the constraints pertinent to the vehicles (such as aircraft and ground-based vehicles) and resources (such as runways and taxiways) in the traffic control spaces. Time-based trajectory data for all vehicles in the traffic control space are continuously and interactively evaluated to detect conflicts that have occurred and/or identify potential conflicts before they occur among vehicles or between vehicles and resources. The systems and methods also generate a conflict resolution using the CEPD logic, which resolution is communicated to the affected vehicles.

Interactive conflict detection and resolution for air and air-ground traffic control

A fault-tolerant timeout protocol for distributed sensor arrays and networks in which each sensor has a plurality of backup nodes, each of which is operable to send priority information which includes the product of the time needed for the backup node to transmit sensor information to a base station and the number of tasks offered to the backup node. In another embodiment, the base station stores the two values and calculates their product. In both cases, the lowest resulting value is used by the base station to select the backup node, which then sends backup sensor information. Another aspect of the present invention is a fault-tolerant sensor integration algorithm. The algorithm creates an abstract sensor defined as an interval having values above and below the reading of an associated physical sensor, and finds a range of values common to more than half of the abstract sensors. The algorithm obtains an output value based on the common range of values, and identifies the correct sensors, possibly faulty sensors, and faulty sensors by identifying the abstract sensors that include, respectively, (a) all of the common range, (b) part of the common range, and (c) none of the common range. A further aspect of the invention is a multi-hop information forwarding method for a wireless network. According to this method, a data source node transmits a signal to neighboring nodes among a plurality of distributed nodes, and each neighboring node which receives the signal from the source node transmits a reply signal which includes a weighted sum of factors including an energy factor and a distance factor for the neighboring node, the energy factor being indicative of the neighboring node's energy level and the distance factor being indicative of its distance from the source node. A forwarding node is selected on the basis of the weighted sums, and the source node transmits a data packet to the selected forwarding node, where the data packet is received and retransmitted either to a data sink node, e.g., a base station, or to another forwarding node.
