A secondary battery exhibiting high charge and discharge rate characteristics can be provided, by making the secondary battery have a cathode including a nitroxyl compound taking a nitroxyl cation substructure represented by the following formula (1) in an oxidized state and a nitroxyl radical substructure represented by the following formula (2) in a reduced state, an anode including an active material capable of reversibly intercalating and deintercalating a lithium ion, and an electrolyte solution including a lithium salt and an aprotic organic solvent, and employing Li[(FSO)N] as the lithium salt:

In a secondary battery utilizing redox by a radical site, charge-discharge is carried out in such a manner that a lithium ion moves between a positive electrode and a negative electrode (rocking chair-type). An anion in an amount necessary for electrode doping during charge-discharge is made unnecessary, thereby reducing the amount of an electrolytic solution. A secondary battery with a large energy density is achieved. Provided is an electrode active material including at least one polymer including a radical site capable of being converted into a first cation, and an anion site capable of being bonded with the first cation or a second cation.

An object of the present invention is to provide a power storage device with excellent cycle property, employing a cathode containing a nitroxyl polymer. To attain the object in the present invention, in the power storage device employing a cathode comprising a nitroxyl polymer, a lithium or lithium alloy anode is used as an anode active material and the cathode is in direct contact with the anode.

There can be provided an energy storage device comprising a positive electrode comprising a nitroxyl compound having a nitroxyl cation partial structure in an oxidized state and having a nitroxyl radical partial structure in a reduced state; a negative electrode comprising a carbon material which lithium ions can be reversibly intercalated into and deintercalated from; and an electrolytic solution comprising a lithium salt and an aprotic organic solvent, wherein the negative electrode is a negative electrode comprising the carbon material which lithium ions are previously intercalated into, apart from lithium ions associated with a capacity A of lithium capable of being intercalated and deintercalated in charge and discharge, thereby allowing the energy storage device to simultaneously achieve high energy density, high output characteristics, low environmental load, and high stability in charge and discharge cycles.

An exemplary embodiment provides: a composite of an electrode active material and an electric conductivity-imparting agent, which has a high capacity density and can produce a large current; a method for producing it; and a battery which has a high energy density and can produce a large output. Specifically, a polyradical compound as the electrode active material and a conductive material are heated and mixed at a temperature of not less than the softening temperature of the polyradical compound and less than the decomposition temperature thereof to form a composite of the polyradical compound and the conductive material. Fabricating an electrode using the composite can provide a novel battery having a high energy density and a large output.

A radical compound may be used as an active material for an anode layerto provide a novel stable secondary battery with a higher energy density and a larger capacity. The radical compound used has, for example, a spin concentration of 10spins/g or more.
