Motor-generators are incorporated in front wheels and drive the front wheels, respectively. An ECU determines whether or not a steering apparatus including a steering actuator, a tie rod and a steering angle sensor has failed, based on an operation angle of a steering wheel from a steering wheel angle sensor and a steering angle of the front wheels from the steering angle sensor. When the ECU determines that the steering apparatus has failed, the ECU provides torque difference for a torque instruction for the motor-generators in accordance with the operation angle of the steering wheel.

An in-wheel motor system includes a knuckle supporting a hub to be rotatable and including a tank portion in which a refrigerant is accumulated, a housing fixedly attached to the knuckle, a motor incorporated within the housing and driving the hub to rotate, and a pump incorporated within the housing and pumping the refrigerant accumulated within the tank portion to the motor by means of a rotational power of the motor to refrigerate the motor.

In-wheel motor system

An in-wheel motor includes a motor, a shaft, an oil pump and oil paths. The oil pump is provided on one end of the shaft. The motor includes a stator core, stator coils and a rotor. The oil pump pumps up an oil from an oil reservoir via an oil path to supply the pumped-up oil to another oil path. The another oil path supplies the oil from the oil pump to the outer periphery of the stator core of the motor from an opening end.

A wheel supporting apparatus includes dampers, ball joints, a knuckle, an upper arm and a lower arm. The dampers are attached to a case of an in-wheel motor in the top-bottom direction of the vehicle's body and are connected respectively to the ball joints. The upper arm and the lower arm have respective one-ends connected to respective dampers via the ball joints and respective other ends pivotably fixed to the vehicle's body. The knuckle is connected to the ball joints to rotatably support a wheel hub via hub bearings.

An in-wheel motor includes a wheel disc, a wheel hub, a case, a motor, a planetary gear and a shaft. The wheel disc is connected to the wheel hub. The planetary gear is connected to the motor's rotor. The case includes subcases and a diaphragm. One subcase is arranged to have a side portion closer to the vehicle's body and accommodates the motor and the planetary gear. The motor and the planetary gear are adjacently arranged and fixed to one subcase. The other subcase is arranged closer to the wheel disc and fixed at a plane perpendicular to the shaft by a screw to one subcase.

The presence or absence of any step-out of an actuator which is used to adjust a damping factor is made always detectable without additional provision of any special sensor such as a position encoder. Based on an equation of motion of a suspension, an estimated acceleration Gp derived from a detected vehicle height Sh and its differential Vr, and an actual acceleration Sg detected by an acceleration sensor, a deviation .DELTA.G is derived and compared against a threshold A. If the magnitude of the deviation is high, the occurrence of the step-out is declared after a given time interval T.sub.0. Upon detecting the occurrence of the step-out, the actuator position is returned to its home position, and the value in the position register is initialized. A skyhook control of the suspension is performed.

A suspension control apparatus comprises a sprung velocity measuring device for measuring a sprung velocity, a relative velocity measuring device for measuring a relative velocity between the sprung and unsprung velocities, a controller for mode-converting, weighting and inversely mode-converting the sprung velocity and relative velocity, and having a dead zone setting circuit for changing over a control value when the polarity of the velocity difference is inverted at a first time, in order to calculate a velocity ratio and determine a target damping force, and an actuator for controlling the opening area in the variable throttle mechanism communicating with the cylinder piston apparatus of absorber was disclosed. The suspension control apparatus has the effect that there is no delay in controlling and any shock and the generation of hunting is prevented.

Suspension control apparatus

A pressure control system for suspension delivers a pressure which is proportional to a current level chosen to energize a solenoid of a pressure control valve to a shock absorber of a suspension. A change in the pressure of a return path which supplies a low pressure to the pressure control valve causes the pressure which is applied to the suspension to change. In order to suppress such change, a junction of the pressure control valve with the return path has an orifice interposed therein or is connected to a low pressure accumulator. On the other hand, in the event a depression occurs in the output of the high pressure piping, a cut valve which functions to isolate the suspension from the pressure control valve may be temporarily cut off in response to a pressure fluctuation in the high pressure piping. In order to prevent this, an orifice is interposed between the high pressure piping and a pilot chamber of the cut valve.
