An ink jet printing apparatus enables a printing operation to be performed for both surfaces of a printing medium with the use of an ink jet head for ejecting ink. The apparatus comprises components for designating either a both surface printing mode or a one surface printing mode, for applying processing liquid to the printing medium, for reducing a quantity of ejection of ink to the printing medium, and for designating either the component for applying processing liquid or that for reducing ejection quantity in the case that the both surface printing mode is designated. Even in the case that the both surface printing mode is selected, the ink jet printing apparatus assures that excellent printing quality can always be maintained by selecting either of a processing liquid usage printing mode for applying processing liquid to the printing medium or a low density printing mode for reducing a quantity of ejection of ink to the printing medium in excess of the original ink ejecting quantity corresponding to image information.

An ink-jet recording method employs a light-tonable recording liquid capable of being toned by light radiation, the liquid preferably containing a recording agent having an absorption peak within a certain wavelength range, an ammonium salt of an organic boron, and a liquid medium. The hue or the density of a desired portion of the light-tonable recording liquid on a recording member is changed by radiating toning light onto that portion. The recording member may have colored portions of an image previously recorded with a light-tonable recording liquid or colored portions just formed in the current recording. Toning light is radiated onto a desired position of the recording region of the member while varying the intensity and/or the period of light radiation in accordance with an information signal. Thus, toning may provide various half-tones or may render the toned portion of the recording liquid colorless, thereby erasing the relevant colored portions. Selective erasure may be followed by re-recording on the same position of the recording region, thereby effecting correction. All-surface erasure allows the recording member to be reused.

A recording apparatus which has reduced the speed variation and vibration of the motor uses a step motor as a driving source for a carrier for carrying a carriage mounted with a recorder or a recording medium. The apparatus includes a controller that, on accelerating the step motor, controls the step motor so that the step motor is driven with a shorter period than the mechanical time constant of the carrier when the rotary speed of the motor is less than a specified value, and so that the motor is driven with a longer period than the mechanical time constant when the rotary speed of the motor is more than the specified value.

An image recording system includes a host computer and a recording apparatus. The host computer generates image data to be recorded as an image. The recording apparatus includes a recording head, an image data generator, an error detector, and a selector. The error detector checks the condition of the recording apparatus to detect any errors. The selector switches between an on-line mode and an off-line mode of the recording system. In the on-line mode, the recording head is capable of recording the image on the recording medium in response to the image data supplied from the host computer. In the off-line mode, the recording means is capable of recording the predetermined image on the recording medium in response to the predetermined image data supplied from the predetermined image data generator. The selector switches to the on-line mode when the error detector does not detect an error and switches to the off-line mode when the error detector does detect an error.

Oscillating apparatus oscillates the recording head toward and away from the recording medium and causes the recording head to abut the reference surface following the forward movement. A fixing device prevents the oscillation effected by the oscillating apparatus and fixes the recording head with respect to the recording medium to protect the recording head from vibration and shock.
