Provided are a barium-sulfate scale inhibitor and a barium-sulfate scale inhibitor composition each of which can express a high barium-sulfate scale-inhibiting ability. Also provided is a method of inhibiting a barium-sulfate scale that can express a high barium-sulfate scale-inhibiting ability. The barium-sulfate scale inhibitor of the present invention includes a sulfonic acid group-containing copolymer obtained by polymerizing a monomer composition containing a carboxyl group-containing monomer and a sulfonic acid group-containing monomer, in which when the barium-sulfate scale inhibitor is added at a solid content concentration of 1 wt % to high-salt-concentration water having a metal salt concentration of 10 wt % or more, the sulfonic acid group-containing copolymer is free from precipitating.

The present invention provides a polymer composition capable of providing fibers with an enough penetration speed and enough water retention, while maintaining a favorable hue of the fibers, when used as a fiber crosslinking agent. The present invention also provides a fiber crosslinking agent and crosslinked fibers using the polymer composition. The present invention further provides a polymer composition that enhances the absorption properties of fibers and is especially useful for applications which strongly require the absorption properties, and a fiber crosslinking agent and crosslinked fibers using the polymer composition. The present invention is a polymer composition containing a poly(meth)acrylic acid polymer; and a bisulfite (salt)-added (meth)acrylic acid (salt) or a hypophosphorous acid (salt).

There are disclosed a novel sulfur-containing poly(unsaturated carboxylic acid) and its uses and production process. A sulfur-containing poly(unsaturated carboxylic acid) having a weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of 500 to 4,500 and a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) of not more than 2.5 is obtained by a production process comprising the step of polymerizing an unsaturated carboxylic acid in the presence of a polymerization initiator to thereby obtain the poly(unsaturated carboxylic acid), wherein: a combination of a persulfate and a bisulfite is used as the polymerization initiator, wherein the polymerization initiator is adjusted in such a manner that: the total amount of the polymerization initiator as used is not smaller than 10 g equivalents per 1 mol of the unsaturated carboxylic acid as used, and the amount of the bisulfite accounts for not smaller than 8 g equivalents of the total amount of the polymerization initiator as used; and the polymerization temperature is controlled so as to be in the range of 25 to 99&#xb0; C. This polymer is used as an essential component of a detergent builder and a kaolin dispersant.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a detergent builder comprising a copolymer excellent in compatibility with a liquid detergent and capable of exhibiting excellent basic abilities such as prevention of recontamination and detergency ratio, and a detergent composition containing the detergent builder. The present invention provides a graft polymer composition and its production process and uses, wherein the graft polymer composition is good both in the builder performance and in the compatibility with liquid detergents. The graft polymer composition comprises at least two graft polymers obtained by a process including the step of graft-polymerizing a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer component onto a main chain including a polyether portion, wherein the monoethylenically unsaturated monomer component includes an unsaturated carboxylic monomer as an essential component. The present invention provides: a specific water-soluble polymer exhibiting a high calcium-ion-scavenging function and further exhibiting a high clay-dispersing function even in high-hardness water; a detergent composition comprising the water-soluble polymer; and uses, other than the detergent composition, by making the best use of the characteristics of the water-soluble polymer. The specific water-soluble polymer, according to the present invention, has a calcium ion scavengeability of not less than 0.40 and further has a clay dispersibility of not less than 0.50 in high-hardness water and, preferably, includes polymers A and B as essential components wherein the polymer A has a calcium ion scavengeability of not less than 0.45 and wherein the polymer B has a clay dispersibility of not less than 0.65 in high-hardness water. The detergent composition comprising this water-soluble polymer has a good detergency even in high-hardness water.
