Abrasion resistant sintered alloy

A fabricated camshaft having individual lobes mounted on tubular collars that are in turn mounted on an internal tubular member that is expanded between the collars to form bearing journals for the camshaft.

Method for making a camshaft

Camshaft

A tool for supporting a composite camshaft having a steel shaft and a sintered piece to be joined to the steel shaft through sintering in a sintering furnace. The tool comprises a graphite frame having at least two sides, in an upper portion of which a groove means is formed. A ceramic layer is provided on a surface of the groove means. When sintering is performed using such a tool, the tool will not deform even if the tool is exposed to an environment of high temperature, such as the temperature higher than 1,100.degree. C., and therefore, bending of the composite camshaft will not occur during sintering. In addition, the ceramic layer prevents diffusion of carbon from the graphite frame to the steel shaft of the composite camshaft, and therefore, a hardening of the steel shaft due to carbonizing will not occur. As a result, reliability of the joint between the sintered piece and the steel shaft is increased.

Tool for supporting a composite camshaft during sintering

A hollow cam shaft of the type wherein lubricating oil is distributed to the cam portions includes a rod member positioned inside the shaft pipe member and spaced from the inner pipe surface by shaft end members and guide strips to form a reduced, annular volume to be filled with oil during engine start-up. The method of making the hollow cam shaft includes forming the rod member from a resinous material by injection molding, using a removable mold positioned in the pipe through-hole, and, in a preferred embodiment, flowing the resin through the mold cavity and into a recess located in the distal shaft end member, which recess has an enlarged portion for capturing the hardened resin rod end and facilitating mold removal.

Cam shaft and method of manufacture

A composite camshaft having a plurality of ferrous fitting members, such as cam lobes and journals, firmly bonded to a steel shaft by sintering in the presence of a liquid phase. The fitting members are fabricated as a green compact from metal powders and pre-sintered to axially shrink the compact by one-half a preselected allowance of shrinkage. Thereafter the pre-sintered fitting members are fitted on the shaft and sintered to axially shrink the compact by the remaining allowance of shrinkage and metallurgically join the shaft.

Method for manufacturing camshaft

A composite camshaft having a plurality of fitting members, such as cam lobes and journals, fabricated from metal powders having a composition of an Fe-C-Cu system which contains 17-35% by weight of Cu and joined to a steel shaft by a binding effect of Cu, which melts out of the fitting member and full penetrate a clearance between the fitting member and the steel shaft to join them as one body.

A wear resistant ferro-based sintered alloy comprising a base structure comprising a mixture of 20 to 50% by area ratio of pearlite, 15 to 40% by area ratio of bainite and 15 to 40% by area ratio of martensite, and 3 to 20% by area ratio of ferromolybdenum particles dispersed uniformly in the base structure is disclosed.

Wear resistant ferro-based sintered alloy

A sintered alloy for a valve seat comprising, in weight percent, 0.5 to 1.7% C, 0.5 to 2.5% Ni, 3.0 to 8.0% Cr, 0.1 to 0.9% Mo, 1.0 to 3.8% W and 4.5 to 8.5% Co, the balance being substantially Fe provided by a base atomized powder; said alloy containing 8 to 14% by volume of 250 mesh or less C-Cr-W-Co-Fe and Fe-Mo hard grains and 6 to 13% by volume of cells, with the continuous cells being infiltrated by a copper alloy.

Sintered alloy for valve seat

A valve seat or similar article produced by sintering a compound body is improved in economy and producibility by employing a method wherein the amount of a second powder for forming the compound body is controlled so as to be minimized. A first powder is initially charged into a compression space and lightly compressed to form a preparatory compact of a desired shape. Subsequently, the second powder is charged in over the preparatory compact to a degree controlled by the displacement of the compact, and the preparatory compact and the second powder are forcefully compressively integrally molded to form a final compact which is then sintered to form the finished product.

Method of making a compound valve seat

A cylinder liner is provided with a white cast iron layer formed in its inner peripheral surface in an area surrounding the top dead center position of the piston, and a thermally created layer is formed underlying the white cast iron layer. The layers may be simultaneously formed by reheating portions of the substantially finished liner with a high density heat radiation source.

Cylinder liner

A cylinder liner for an internal combustion engine has a white case iron layer formed by remelting and cooling a part or whole of areas of an outer peripheral surface of the cylinder liner. A thermally affected layer is also formed between the white cast iron layer and the parent material. This cylinder liner has improved anti-cavitation properties.

An internal combustion engine including a piston and cylinder liner in which the cylinder liner is provided with plural annular hardened layers formed on the inner peripheral surface thereof in the vicinity of the top dead center of the piston. The distance between adjacent ones of the annular hardened layers is smaller than the axial length of a piston ring employed with the piston. The width of each of the hardened layers is in a range of from one-half to twice the axial length of the piston ring. The hardened layers may be formed by hardening with a laser beam. The piston ring can be provided with a hardened layer on its outer surface. The piston ring preferably has a barrel shape.

Cylinder or cylinder liner

An abrasion resistant ferro-based sintered alloy comprising 1.1 to 1.6% by weight of carbon, 1.5 to 3.5% by weight of chromium, 1.6 to 2.9% by weight of molybdenum, 1.0 to 3.0% by weight of nickel, 3.0 to 5.0% by weight of cobalt, 0.5 to 1.5% by weight of tungsten, 1.8 to 18.0% by weight of copper and the balance iron wherein said alloy contains particles of specific alloy comprising C-Cr-W-Co and ferromolybdenum particles are uniformly dispersed in the base structure comprising a mixture of pearlite, bainite and martensite and wherein nickel and cobalt are distributed around the particles of specific alloy and of ferromolybdenum alloy is disclosed.
