A camshaft includes, as a cam that opens and closes an exhaust valve and an intake valve, a ball cam whose protrusion amount changes according to rotation of the camshaft, wherein the camshaft has a double structure consisting of an inner shaft and an outer shaft provided in a manner that the inner shaft is helically displaced with respect to the outer shaft around an axis of the camshaft according to a rotation speed of the camshaft, and the ball cam is accommodated movably in a guide groove provided in the inner shaft and protrudes from the outer shaft, and a protrusion amount of the ball cam from the outer shaft changes when the ball cam moves in the guide groove due to the helical displacement of the inner shaft with respect to the outer shaft.

In an exemplary embodiment, an internal combustion engine, in which a valve is opened and closed when a piston reciprocates in a cylinder, has a configuration to perform repeatedly the following combined strokes: an intake stroke&#x2192;a compression stroke&#x2192;a combustion stroke&#x2192;an exhaust stroke in a four-cycle internal combustion engine are combined with an intake and compression stroke&#x2192;a combustion and exhaust stroke in a two-cycle internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine can reduce pumping loss in a six-cycle internal combustion engine and increase the output.

Internal-combustion engine and drive system

An air cleaner is used in a two-stroke internal combustion engine to supply an air-fuel mixture passage and a fresh air passage in a carburetor with air cleaned by an air cleaner element. The air cleaner includes an air cleaner base having an air-fuel mixture opening communicating with the air-fuel mixture passage and a fresh air opening communicating with the fresh air passage, and an air guide member provided at the air-fuel mixture opening. The air guide member is configured to curve near the air-fuel mixture opening and extend from there along the air cleaner base, and has a cross section surrounded by a peripheral wall. The air guide member defines a mixture-use air extension passage for air to be added to prepare an air-fuel mixture air-fuel mixture, which extends from a first clean air intake to the air-fuel mixture opening. Blown-back gas from the air-fuel mixture passage hits against the inner wall of the curved portion of the air guide member, and is therefore restricted to flow out of the first clean air intake and leak into the air cleaner. Thereby, harmful emissions in the exhaust gas from the two-stroke internal engine can be reduced.

Air cleaner for two-stroke internal combustion engine and method of tuning the length of air-fuel mixture passage by using the air cleaner

A cylinder bore () of a two-stroke internal combustion engine () has first scavenging ports () and second scavenging ports () inside. The first scavenging ports () are nearer to an exhaust port () of the engine () than the second scavenging ports (). In each scavenging stroke, the second scavenging ports () are opened earlier than the first scavenging ports () and introduce fuel-free air (A) from the second scavenging ports () into a combustion chamber (). The first scavenging ports () are opened later and introduce an air-fuel mixture (M) pre-compressed in a crank chamber () into the same combustion chamber (). Thus, harmful substances contained in exhaust gas discharged from the engine () are reduced.

Two-stroke internal combustion engine

A two-stroke internal combustion engine having a Schn&uuml;rle scavenging system includes a pair of first scavenging ports and a pair of second scavenging ports. An inner horizontal scavenging angle formed close to an exhaust port and an outer horizontal scavenging angle formed remote from the exhaust port by a pair of scavenging flows blown out of the pair of the first scavenging ports are both set to an angle in the range of from 116 to 124 degrees. An inner horizontal scavenging angle formed close to the exhaust port and an outer horizontal scavenging angle formed remote from the exhaust port by a pair of scavenging flows blown out of the pair of the second scavenging ports are set to angles in the ranges of from 126 to 134 degrees and from 146 to 154 degrees, respectively.

A muffler for an internal combustion engine has a vertically elongated expansion chamber into which an exhaust gas from the exhaust port of internal combustion engine is introduced. The expansion chamber is separated level-wise into a first expansion chamber and a second expansion chamber by a partition plate. An exhaust emission purifier formed of an oxidation catalyst is attached to the partition plate, thereby allowing the exhaust gas ejected from the exhaust port to be introduced into the second expansion chamber from the first expansion chamber via the exhaust emission purifier. The exhaust emission purifier is spaced apart from the exhaust port by a predetermined distance in a direction orthogonal to an ejecting direction of the exhaust gas.

In a two-stroke internal combustion engine, total hydrocarbon (THC) exhaust is decreased as a result of small structural changes and without loss of output power. A Schnurle scavenging-type combustion chamber has a hemispherical main surface and an annular skirt-like squish band, and a spark plug is disposed for a spark point to be substantially at the center of the combustion chamber. The squish band has minimized width.

A muffler for a two-stroke internal combustion engine has an expansion chamber into which a rush of exhaust gas is introduced from the engine. In the vicinity of an exhaust gas inlet from the engine into the expansion chamber, the muffler has an external air intake for external air to be suctionally introduced into the expansion chamber by the rush of exhaust gas. With the external air introduced, carbon monoxide (CO) emission into the ambient is reduced.

A recoil starter device for starting an internal combustion engine has a recoil case attached at its one end to a portion of the internal combustion engine and opened at its other end, a shaft having one end rotatably supported by and extended through a wall of the recoil case and the other end fixedly carrying a recoil pulley on which is wound a rope, and a recoil cover detachably secured to the recoil case so as to cover the opening.
