A main scale is firmly bonded to a metal tape having a desired coefficient of linear expansion by a powerful adhesive. At the same time, the metal tape is fixed to a frame by a two-sided adhesive tape so as to be capable of expansion and contraction. A length measuring apparatus is provided, wherein a scale material which is unstable with respect to variations in temperature and humidity is stabilized, thereby achieving a desired coefficient of linear expansion.

Disclosed is a light transmitting apparatus between a rotor and a stator for transmitting data. The apparatus comprises a light-emitting element arranged in a position of a first reference radius of the rotor for emitting a light beam in accordance with the data to be transmitted, a photo-detecting element arranged in a position of a second reference radius on the stator for detecting the beam, and a fan-shaped optical guide member positioned between the stator and the rotor, made of a transparent material, and fixed to the stator. An optical multiplexing and demultiplexing device of a type using a lens and a diffraction grating, which incorporates a waveguide array having waveguide channels with narrow spacings for facilitating high resolution, where the narrow spacings are realized by forming an etching groove between each adjacent waveguide channels and providing a measure for preventing optical coupling among the waveguide channels in the form of an air gap, or a layer having a refractive index lower than a cladding layer, or a layer for absorbing/reflecting light, which is provided in the etching groove. The inner edge of at least one of such blades defining one side of the aperture is uneven over at least part of the length of the inner edge. The spacing between adjacent relatively high portions and relatively low portions, as well as the depth, is smaller than the exposed length of the inner edge of each aperture blade when the aperture device has been operated to the minimum aperture size. Preferably, the spacing between adjacent crests or between adjacent high portions and low portions of the unevenness varies in a non-periodic manner.

A projector capable of compactizing the structure and improving the efficiency of light utilization is disclosed. The projector has an illuminating system, a light modulation device and a projection optical system. A first and a second lights of mutually different colors are emitted from the illumination optical system. The light modulating device has a first light modulator for modulating the first light according to a first image signal and a second light modulator for modulating the second light according to a second image signal. Each of the first and second light modulators is provided with a grating, a liquid crystal filled in the grooves of the grating and a driver for driving the molecules of the liquid crystal. The driver is adapted to drive the molecules of the liquid crystal in such a manner that the liquid crystal and the grating have mutually substantially matching refractive indexes in a certain state but have mutually unmatched refractive indexes in another state, thereby generating or substantially erasing a diffraction grating by the grating and the liquid crystal.
