In a thermal recording medium including a basic chromogenic dye, a developer and a sensitizer, a composition for a thermal recording medium which composition contains 50 ppm to 5.0 mass % of 1-(3-methylphenoxy)-2-(4-methylphenoxy)ethane and/or 1,2-bis(4-methylphenoxy)ethane in 1,2-bis(3-methylphenoxy)ethane is used as said sensitizer, whereby the 1,2-bis(3-methylphenoxy)ethane compound is remarkably improved in milling property in the preparation of the above sensitizer, and a thermal recording medium is provided without impairing the colorability, etc., such as thermal colorability.

The invention provides a heat-sensitive recording material, which is highly sensitive, is almost free of staining on the background, and gives a recorded image excellent in stability during storage, by using a finely divided sensitizer dispersion excellent in shelf stability produced in a short time with high volumetric efficiency. The invention relates to a method of producing a sensitizer dispersion, which comprises emulsifying and finely dividing a heat-sensitive recording sensitizer by melting under heating in an aqueous emulsifying dispersant, and then crystallizing the finely divided emulsified dispersion under rapid cooling, wherein the sensitizer is at least one member selected from the group consisting of 1,2-bis(phenoxy)ethane, 1,2-bis(3-methylphenoxy)ethane, 1,2-bis(4-methylphenoxy)ethane, p-benzylbiphenyl, di-p-methylbenzyl oxalate, and &#x3b2;-naphthyl benzyl ether.

A thermal recording medium comprising a as a developer a sulfonyl compound represented by general formula (1) or a polyvalent metal salt thereof. ##STR1## where X represents H or a lower alkyl group, R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represent H, halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, a lower alkyl group or a cycloalkyl group, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 represent H, halogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a cycloalkyl group, and R.sub.7 represents H or ##STR2## where R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are as defined above. The present invention provides a color developer composition characterized in that the composition contains a color developer comprising as its main component a nucleus-substituted salicylic acid salt represented by the formula (1) given below, and at least one amide compound selected from the group consisting of the compounds of represented by the formula (2) and formula (3) given below. ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 to R.sub.10 are as defined in the specification.

A method for preparing a sulfone represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R' represents a lower alkyl group, an aryl group or an aryl group whose nucleus has at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of a halogen atom, nitro group, a lower alkyl group, phenyl group and a phenyl group substituted with a halogen atom, or an alkali metal salt thereof. A sulfonic acid ester of 4-hydroxybiphenyl is condensed at a temperature of 0.degree. to 200.degree. C. in a presence of a Lewis acid or a super-strong acid with a sulfonyl chloride represented by the formula R'SO.sub.2 Cl, wherein R' is the same as that defined above.

Herein disclosed are a method for preparing an aqueous developer dispersion which comprises the steps of dissolving, in an organic solvent, a developer which comprises a nuclear-substituted salicylic acid salt represented by the following general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 may be the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group having not more than 15 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group, a phenyl group, a nuclear-substituted phenyl group, an aralkyl group or a nculear-substituted aralkyl group, or two adjacent groups selected from R.sub.1 to R.sub.4 may be bonded together to form a ring; n is an integer of not less than 1; and M represents magnesium, calcium, zinc, aluminum, iron, cobalt, nickel or a basic ion thereof; emulsifying and dispersing the resulting solution in an aqueous solution of an acrylamide copolymer having a degree of polymerization of not less than 100 obtained by copolymerizing 96 to 70 mole % of acrylamide with 4 to 30 mole % of an alkyl or alkoxyalkyl, having not more than 4 carbon atoms, ester of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid or maleic acid; then heating the emulsified dispersion to remove the organic solvent by distillation; and optionally finely wet-pulverizing the resulting aqueous dispersion to an extent that reduction in the average particle size of the developer dispersed in the dispersion does not exceed 10%; as well as pressure-sensitive recording paper obtained using the aqueous developer dispersion. The recording paper is substantially improved in the developing density, developing velocity and printability.

Herein disclosed are a method for preparing an aqueous developer dispersion which comprises the steps of dissolving, in an organic solvent, a developer which comprises a nuclear-substituted salicylic acid salt represented by the following general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 may be the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group having not more than 15 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group, a phenyl group, a nuclear-substituted phenyl group, an aralkyl group or a nuclear-substituted aralkyl group, or two adjacent groups selected from R.sub.1 to R.sub.4 may be bonded together to form a ring; n is an integer of not less than 1; and M represents magnesium, calcium, zinc, aluminum, iron, cobalt, nickel or a basic ion thereof; emulsifying and dispersing the resulting solution in an aqueous solution of an acrylamide copolymer having a degree of polymerization of not less than 100 obtained by copolymerizing 96 to 70 mol % of acrylamide with 4 to 30 mol % of an alkyl or alkoxyalkyl, having not more than 4 carbon atoms, ester of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid or maleic acid; then heating the emulsified dispersion to remove the organic solvent by distillation; and optionally finely wet-pulverizing the resulting aqueous dispersion to an extent that reduction in the average particle size of the developer dispersed in the dispersion does not exceed 10%. The recording paper is substantially improved in the developing density, developing velocity and printability.
