This invention relates to a process for forming a multi-layer coating film by applying, to a substrate, intermediate paint, metallic paint and clear paint by 3C1B method, which process is characterized in that said intermediate paint contains 0.5 to 5 phr of flat talc powder of a size of 0.5 to 10 &mgr;m in longer direction and 0.01 to 1 &mgr;m in thickness, and has a total pigment content of 40 to 100 phr.

A process for forming a multilayer film, which comprises applying, onto a substrate, (A) a liquid solid-color coating which comprises a thermosetting resin composition and a metal powder coated with a coloring pigment, and (B) a clear coating in this order without substantially curing the resulting films of the coatings (A) and (B) and then heating the two films to crosslink and cure them simultaneously. The process of the present invention provides a multilayer film of smaller thickness, excellent hiding power and improved properties such as surface smoothness, chipping resistance and the like.

Process for formation of multilayer film

A process for forming a multilayer film having superior high white iridescent appearance which comprises applying (A) a liquid white coating which comprises a thermosetting resin composition, a metal powder coated with a white pigment, and a titanium dioxide pigment, (B) a light-iridescent coating, and (C) a clear coating onto a substrate in this order to form a multilayer film, and then heating the substantially uncured films to crosslink and cure them simultaneously.

C., and a clear coating (E) in this order on a wet-on-wet basis, and heating the formed films of the coatings (C), (D) and (E) to crosslink and cure the three films simultaneously. According to the method, part of the heat-curing steps employed in multilayer film formation can be eliminated and a multilayer film of smaller thickness and improved properties (e.g. improved surface smoothness and chipping resistance) can be obtained.

The present invention provides a method for film formation, which comprises applying onto a substrate an electrocoating (A) and an intermediate coating (B) in this order, heat-curing the formed films of the coatings (A) and (B), applying thereon a liquid deep color coating (C) which comprises 100 parts by weight of a thermosetting resin composition, 0.1-30 parts by weight of an aluminum powder having an average particle diameter of 10.mu. or less, 1-100 parts by weight of a titanium oxide pigment and 0.1-10 parts by weight of a carbon black pigment and which shows a film hiding power of 25.mu. or less and a film elongation ratio of 10-50% at 20.degree. Method for film formation

A method for forming a coating film by sequentially forming a pigmented base coat and a clear top coat on a substrate. The pigmented base coat composition includes (1) an OH-containing resin, (2) an amino resin, (3) a polyorganosiloxane resin a number average molecule weight of at least 1,000 and having at least two groups per molecule selected from a silanol group and an alkoxysilane group and (4) a flaky metal or a mica powder in (5) an organic solvent.
