To measure the concentration of an optically active substance in a solution without contacting the solution, the concentration measuring apparatus of the present invention includes: a light source for outputting linearly polarized light; a light intensity detecting element disposed opposite the light source with a sample placed therebetween; an optically active liquid crystal element placed between the light source and the light intensity detection circuit; a control circuit which controls the voltage to be applied to the optically active liquid crystal element so that an output value from the light intensity detecting element will in effect take an extreme value; and a concentration computing circuit for computing the concentration of an optically active substance in the sample, based on an output from the control circuit.

Concentration measuring instrument

A power supply circuit having a data driver power circuit, which has a temperature compensation function and a voltage regulation function, and a scan driver power circuit that has a function of controlling the brightness of the liquid crystal display device as a user desires. An LCD device comprising an LCD for changing the size of a displayed unit of pixels by electrically connecting a plurality of display electrodes in parallel with one another for time-sharing matrix driving liquid crystal pixels arranged as a matrix wherein image data is independently inputted into upper and lower half portions of the LCD, a display controller for outputting upper and lower side image data to be displayed on the upper and lower half portions of the LCD and synchronous signals. The LCD device further comprises an upper side image data-holding memory and a lower side image data-holding memory for dividing image data in a given display area from a screenful of image data outputted from the display controller into new upper and lower side image data to be written and held in the upper and lower side image data-holding memories. The upper and lower side image data held in the upper and lower side memories are read out to be repeatedly displayed on the upper and lower half portions of the LCD. As a result, the image from any desired display area of a full-screen area can be enlargedly displayed on a full-screen area of a display with high quality and be easily visible without being discontinuous.

Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal active lens having, in combination, a fixed-focal-point lens having a high index of refraction and a phase modulation element comprising two-dimensionally arranged fine pixels, and having power and being capable of electrically controlling the lens characteristics as a function of space. An electrically controlled optical system can be realized without having a moving portion. Owing to the combination of the liquid crystal element for modulating space phase and the high-power lens of a fixed focal length, it is possible to electronically control the focal length and to electronically control the lens in a spatially split manner.

A selecting electrode drive circuit is capable of providing drive pulses of twice as high having an amplitude twice as large as the breakdown voltage of semiconductor devices used in the circuit. The drive pulses thus provided are applied to selecting electrodes of a matrix type display device and the driving circuit includes a pulse generator for generating a train of reference pulses, a power supply connected to the pulse generator for level-shifting the reference pulses by the crest value of the power supply and a switching circuit is powered by the power supply.

Liquid crystal display having opaque portions on the electrodes

A drive method for a liquid crystal matrix display panel whereby the display is driven as two or more separate regions, with each region being successively driven by row and column drive signals to display video data in a row-by-row manner during a drive phase while the remaining regions operate in a rest phase in which a potential substantially equal to zero is applied across the display elements of these other regions. The effective number of row electrodes to which sequential scanning signal pulses are applied, which determines the level of contrast obtainable with such a display panel when the number of display elements is large, is made equal to the number of row electrodes of each of these regions, so that a sufficiently high number of elements for high-resolution television display is attainable with a simple display panel and peripheral circuit configuration.
