In a ballpoint pen which is formed to have an ink-consumption value per unit area of 0.64 to 1.6 mg/cm , the surface tension of the ink for the ball point pen is adjusted to a range of 16 to 32 mN/m so that blotting, line splitting and the like hardly occur, that the ink transferred onto the paper surface is ready to be dried and that fluctuation in the density and width of the written lines are less likely to occur due to a storage environment and to a writing condition.

In a ball pen which is formed to have an ink-consumption value per unit area of 0.64 to 1.6 mg/cm , the water content is adjusted in the range from 30.0 to 80.0 wt %, the content of a volatilization-inhibiting substance in the range from 0.1 to 10.0 wt % and the content of a hardly-volatile water-soluble liquid medium in the range from 1.0 to 40.0 wt % in the ink for a ball pen in order to achieve both the quick-drying property of the ink transferred onto the paper surface and the non-drying property of the point of the pen-tip and further a good writing feeling.

Provided is an ink composition comprising at least a colorant and water, wherein the ink composition further contains 0.5 to 15% by weight of reduced dextrin or reduced maltodextrin based on the total weight of the ink composition. It is a water based ink composition for a ball point pen which is excellent in dryout resistance and is safe and which does not cause a fluctuation in a viscosity and a pH with the passage of time.

Further, a viscosity-controlling agent is added thereto to thereby prepare a water based ink for a ball point pen which has feathering resistance, good writing feeling and high discharge stability and which is excellent in drying prevention effect at a pen tip.

Provided is a water based ink for a writing instrument comprising at least a colorant, a dispersant, water and a polar solvent, wherein the ink contains 0.5 to 20% by weight of dextrin or maltodextrin based on the weight of the whole ink. It has an excellent drying resistance.

The aqueous ink composition for ball point pens of the present invention is excellent in lubricating properties, can control ball sinkage, and can give a smooth writing feeling.
