In a default device of an actuator for a variable lift valve operating mechanism, in the event of failure of the actuator, a pressed portion of a lever pivotably supported on a support shaft is urged by a resilient force of a coil spring, an arm is pressed by a cam portion of the lever to rotate a control shaft in one direction to prevent valve lift from being a predetermined value or lower. The support shaft that pivotably supports the lever of a default mechanism is placed in a position offset from a rotation axis of the control shaft. Thus, as compared with the case where the support shaft is placed coaxially with the control shaft, a large urging force is input from the lever to the control shaft to reliably prevent the valve lift from being the predetermined value or lower.

In an internal combustion engine, an actuator for driving a control shaft of a variable valve-operating mechanism is disposed in a space surrounded by a cylinder head having a plurality of intake ports, an intake manifold having a plurality of branch pipes connected to the intake ports, and a throttle body disposed at one end in a direction of arrangement of the branch pipes. Thus, the actuator can be disposed by effectively utilizing such an unused space surrounded by the cylinder head, the intake manifold and the throttle body, thereby reducing the entire length and the entire height of the internal combustion engine including the actuator.

Disclosed herein is a method of controlling the proliferation of an aerobe, in which in the continuous culture of the aerobe by supplying a substrate and oxygen to a culture tank of the aerobe to cause the aerobe to decompose the substrate, the proliferation of the aerobe is inhibited while retaining the substrate-decomposing activity inherent in the aerobe. An oxidation-reduction substance which is reduced by electrons donated by an electron transport system of the aerobe and oxidized by oxygen supplied to the culture tank is caused to coexist with the aerobe in the culture tank.

A harness holder is disposed to extend along the inside of a cover member which covers a driving pulley and a timing belt, and a harness extending from a crank angle sensor is supported in the harness holder and prevented from contacting the belt and/or pulley. A high probability of detecting an erroneous misfire occurs when combustion becomes unstable during jolt control. Therefore, during jolt control the reliability of the misfire detection system is degraded. As a result, the misfire detection system is inactivated during jolt control by discontinuing the misfire detection, or by deliberately deeming no misfire has occurred if jolt control has occurred. Alternatively, the misfire detection sensitivity is masked during jolt control.

An ignition coil has a capacitor for detecting ignition voltage of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine to determine if misfire occurs. The ignition coil has a primary winding and a secondary winding both wound around a core. A connector section, connected to the secondary winding by a lead, is provided for receiving a high-voltage cable to transmit the secondary winding voltage current to an ignition distributor. These components are embedded integrally in an insulator resin at the time of completing the coil. A conductor is also embedded in the insulator resin such that it is located around the connector section keeping a predetermined distance therefrom and sandwiching the insulator resin, whereby a capacitor, which constitutes a capacitive divider in cooperation with a second capacitor for detecting misfire through the ignition voltage, is formed between the connector section and the conductor. A ceramic insulator can be positioned between the conductor and the connector section. The conductor can further be electrically shielded.

A connector disposed at a distal end of a high tension cord having a conductive core therein for carrying an ignition voltage current for igniting air-fuel mixture in an internal combustion engine. A value related to electric resistance across a gap between electrodes of each spark plug is measured. Next, it is determined whether or not the measured value, related to the electric resistance, assumes a value indicating that the electric resistance is below a predetermined value, when the engine is determined to be in a non-combustive state. The spark plug is determined to be abnormal when it is determined that the measured value, related to the electric resistance, assumes the value indicating that the electric resistance is below the predetermined value.
