A high density electrical connector includes an insulating housing having contacts arranged in rows to engage the contacts of a mating connector, or first printed circuit board, with the contacts having ends extending in freestanding relationship relative to the housing and including a guide member having beveled surfaces to guide the free ends of the contacts into alignment with holes of a second printed circuit board to facilitate mounting of the connector housing and contacts on the second printed circuit board. Embodiments include a guide member which divide at least one row of contacts into two rows and a guide member which guide four rows of contacts into rows of holes in the printed circuit board. The invention contemplates particularly right angle connectors having contacts wherein the freestanding ends are on slightly different centers.

An electrical connector includes a housing (12) having a horizontal mounting surface (14) and a plurality of closely spaced contacts (25, 26) with portions (25c, 26c) that are solderable to the conductive traces on a printed circuit board surface. A separable plate (30) is affixed to the housing and includes channels (32) receiving the portions (25c, 26c) to precisely position such portions for soldering to the board traces. Member (30) can be thereafter removed from housing (12) to allow full inspection of the solder joints formed during the soldering operation.

An electrical connector (30) and a method of making includes a base housing (40) holding contacts (41) on close spacing and a face housing (50) fitted onto the base housing to protect the contacts. The base housing (40) includes an alignment post (46) integrally formed with the contacts as intercoupled by a carrier section to tie the contact position and alignment post position together dimensionally. The alignment post includes a slot (45) receiving a fastener (35) fitted therein with barbs (37) projecting outwardly to latch the post and thereby the base and face housings to a printed circuit board for surface mounting to the traces of the board.

A shielded electrical connector for matable and latchable connection with a complementary electrical connector (50) comprises an electrical contact assembly (27) covered by a metal shield member (11) having a profiled mating section (31) for matable engagement with a profiled mating section (52) of the complementary connector (50); latch members (20a, 20b) having slots (24) with sections (24') of the slots (24) having mounting sections (13') of L-shaped mounting members (13) of the shield members (11) disposed therein pivotally mounting the latch members on (20a, 20b) the shield member, and maintaining sections (13') of the mounting members (13) along with cantilever members (25) of the latch members (20, 20b) maintaining the latch members on the mounting members (11), and spring members (26) of the latch members (20a,20b) engaging the shield member (11) maintaining hook members (23) of the latch members (20a, 20b) in latching engagement with latching hooks (53) of the complementary connector (50).
