Proposed are the welding conditions under which welds are always stably formed such that the difference in hardness between flash-butt welds and rail base metal and the deflection in a bending test are in better ranges. A plurality of pieces of rail base metal are joined via welds formed by flash-butt welding, where the rail base metal has a chemical composition containing C: 0.60 to 1.20 mass %, Si: 0.10 to 1.50 mass %, Mn: 0.10 to 1.50 mass %, and Cr: 0.10 to 1.50 mass %, with the balance being Fe and inevitable impurities, and the flash-butt welding is performed with an amount of welding heat input of 1.50×10kA×sec or more and 4.50×10kA×sec or less.

Provided are an Mn--Zn ferrite in which the core loss is low and Bs is high at high temperatures; a transformer capable of being small-sized and suitable to use at high temperatures; and a method for efficiently driving the transformer. Also provided is a transformer capable of being small-sized and suitable to use in a broad temperature range including high temperatures. Further provided are a high-efficiency transformer capable of being small-sized, in which the core loss in the ferrite core is low and the saturation magnetic flux density is high therein at the temperature at which the transformer is driven; and a high-efficiency driving method for the transformer. Depending on its use, Mn--Zn ferrite to be the ferrite core for the transformers comprises, as the essential components, specific amounts of Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, ZnO and MnO, and, as the side components, specific amounts of SiO.sub.2, CaCO.sub.3, Nb.sub.2 O.sub.5 and ZrO.sub.2. The core of the transformers is made of the Mn--Zn ferrite.

A micro pump which employs magnetostrictive or electrostrictive elements as solid drive elements and is capable of self-priming even though its flow rate is increased. In the pump, disk-shaped valve elements respectively having tapered protrusions on one side are used as check valves to reduce weight and made to follow the motion of liquids so as to smoothly open and close. Retainers for regulating the gap h between the valve seats and the valve elements are respectively provided with tapered recesses for guiding the protrusions of the valve elements, whereby the valves are prevented from contacting the retainers, thus undergoing less friction therewith, to ensure smooth opening and closure of the valves. Moreover, ringlike or sheetlike elastic materials are provided on the bottoms of the recesses to improve responsivity in the direction in which the valves are closed.

A monocrystal of a R-T intermetallic compound containing R (at least one lanthanide element inclusive of Y) and T (at least one transition metal element such as Fe, Co, Ni, Cr and Mn) is grown by a solid phase method. First a precursor in which a primary phase of the intermetallic compound and a low-melting eutectic crystal phase exist is prepared. The precursor is successively heated from one end to another end while it is often contacted at one end with a seed crystal. Then the low-melting eutectic crystal phase functions as a flux intergranular substance to ensure the consistent manufacture of a monocrystal aligned with the crystallographic orientation of the seed crystal or at the start-of-heating point.
