An optical device includes a transparent material layer having a desired curved surface configuration, a layer including a variable refractive index material having a dielectric constant anisotropy, at least two transparent electrodes arranged to sandwich the transparent material layer and the variable refractive index material, and a driving device supplying a voltage including driving frequencies fand fbetween the transparent electrodes. The difference &#x394;&#x2208; in the dielectric constant of the variable refractive index material due to the anisotropy is positive at one of the driving frequencies and negative at the other driving frequency.

Optical device and three-dimensional display device

Liquid crystal optical device

A polymer dispersed liquid crystal optical device is presented which has optical elements which control reflection, transmission and diffraction of incident light entering the device by adjusting the magnitude of the electrical field applied to the device between a maximum and a minimum limits. An optical element consists of a polymer material having an electrical field-independent refractive index, and a liquid crystal material having an electrical field-dependent refractive index. The optical elements are distributed through the device at specific inter-element spacings, thus enabling to generate reflection of incident light in accordance with Bragg's law of reflection. The inter-element spacings can also be varied by the application of the field, thus enabling to generate reflection of light of a desired wavelength. Such optical elements are ideal for use in full color optical display apparatus of a matrix driven type. Methods for producing the optical device and optical display apparatus are also presented.

Method for making an optical device using a laser beam interference

A videocamera is disposed diagonally to the front of a display and the image of a subject is reflected toward the videocamera by a half-transparent mirror placed in front of the screen of the display. The half-transparent mirror has in its front inclined strip-like micro reflective surfaces and inclined strip-like micro transparent surfaces which emit therethrough incident light from the display screen. The angle between each micro transparent surface and a strip-like micro area formed on the back of the half-transparent mirror in opposing relation to the micro transparent surface is determined so that the half-transparent mirror has a light collecting or condensing effect.

Display and image capture apparatus

In a display and image capture apparatus for a videophone or video teleconferencing system a half-transparent mirror array is disposed adjacent the display surface of a display and an image reflected by the half-transparent mirror array is captured by a video camera. The half-transparent mirror array is formed by a plurality of micro HMs arranged in the same plane at a predetermined inclination angle and reflects incident light from a subject toward the video camera.

Display and image capture apparatus which enables eye contact

An original image is divided into a plurality of image parts in the forms of image signals which are then given to liquid crystal light valves, respectively so that liquid crystal light valves display the plurality of image parts therein. These liquid crystal light valves allow light from light sources to pass through so as to form image light beams which are intensity-modulated in accordance with the divided image parts. A plurality of mirrors reflect the image light beams and introduce them onto a projecting lens system. In this arrangement, the plurality of mirrors are located in such a way that their reflecting surfaces do not cross the optical axis of the projecting lens system, and the image light beams are synthesized on the screen so as to reproduce an original image. Accordingly, the pixel density of the original image can be multiplied by a multiplier which equal to the number of used liquid crystal light valves.

Projector

An active matrix type display device is disclosed having an m number of unit pixel array blocks repetitively arranged in a row direction. Each pixel array block comprises a k rows.times.n columns matrix of display elements (Cij, i=1, 2, . . . n, j=1, 2, . . . n) and scanning lines G1 . . . Gn and data signal lines D1 . . . Dn are arranged in an intersecting fashion with first and second switching elements of each display element connected to the corresponding lines in a manner to provide different data input routes.
