A filament using a high melting point metal compound such as tantalum carbide is provided. As the filament, a filament comprising a tungsten base material, a tantalum layer coating the tungsten base material, and a tantalum carbide layer coating the tantalum layer is used. The tantalum layer and the tantalum carbide layer may be replaced with a hafnium layer and a hafnium carbide layer, respectively, or may be formed of a combination of tantalum and hafnium.

Light source device, method for manufacturing the same and filament

An yttrium film is formed on the surface of a substrate made of an Ni&mdash;Cr-based material by deposition or sputtering using resistance heating or an electron beam. The yttrium film is heated in an inert gas atmosphere containing a very small amount of hydrogen to hydrogenate yttrium. The resultant yttrium hydride is excellent as a cold emission material for a cold emission electrode and can be used for a cold emission discharge fluorescent tube.

A method of manufacturing a cold-cathode for a discharging device by forming a film containing a rare earth element on a base plate; and oxidizing said rare earth element of said film. The oxidizing step can be accomplished by heating the rare earth element of said film in a gas atmosphere containing oxygen and/or oxygen-containing substance in a concentration of 1% or less by volume.

Method of manufacturing a cold-cathode for a discharge device

A cold-cathode discharge display device which includes a fluorescent tube and electrodes containing R.sub.2 O.sub.3-z, where R is an atom or an atom group of rare earth elements, O is oxygen, and z is 0.0 to 1.0, to perform field emission of electrons and emission of secondary electrons. The electrodes are generated with an electron emitting film containing rare earth elements.

Display device with specific electrode structure and composition

A cold-cathode discharge device for emitting light. The device has a fluorescent tube and electrodes containing R.sub.2 O.sub.3-z (where R is an atom or an atom group of rare earth elements, O is oxygen, and z is 0.0 to 1.0). The electrodes are made by oxidation of the rare earth elements under an atmosphere in which oxygen and/or oxygen-containing substance is 1% or less by volume, in order to control the stoichiometry of the oxide.
