A coated cutting tool comprising a substrate containing a cubic boron nitride-containing sintered body, and a coating layer formed on the substrate, wherein the coating layer comprises a lowermost layer and an alternating laminate structure in this order, the lowermost layer comprises (AlCr)N, an average thickness of the lowermost layer is 0.01 μm or more and 0.2 μm or less, the alternating laminate structure includes mutually different two kinds of compound layers of a first compound layer containing (AlCr)N and a second compound layer containing (AlCr)N alternately laminated repeatedly twice or more, an average thickness of the entire alternating laminate structure is 0.1 μm or more and 1.2 μm or less, an average thickness of the entire coating layer is 0.2 μm or more and 1.3 μm or less, and a compressive residual stress at the cubic crystal (111) plane is 3.0 GPa or less.

A coated cutting tool is provided which allows for satisfactory machining over a long period of time, particularly in the machining of difficult-to-machine materials with low thermal conductivity. The coated cutting tool includes a substrate and a coating layer formed on a surface of the substrate, wherein: at least one layer of the coating layer comprises a predetermined layer containing a compound having a composition represented by the formula: (AlTi)N [wherein x denotes an atomic ratio of the Al element based on a total of the Al element and the Ti element, and x satisfies 0.60&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.85]; a value of an orientation index TC (311) of a cubic (311) plane of the predetermined layer is from 2.5 or more to 4.2 or less; and an average thickness of the predetermined layer is from 1.0 &#x3bc;m or more to 12.0 &#x3bc;m or less.

A coated cutting tool includes a coating layer formed on a substrate. The coating layer includes an alternating laminate structure of two or more compound layers of each of two or more different compositions. One layer contains a compound having a composition (AlM)N, where atomic ratio x is 0.58 to 0.90; and another layer contains a compound having a composition (AlM)N, where atomic ratio y is 0.57 to 0.79. M is an element of at least one kind selected from Groups 4, 5, and 6 elements and Si. An absolute value of a difference between amounts of a specific metal element in the compound layers relative to amounts of the metal element respectively contained therein is between 0 and 5 atom %. An average thickness of each compound layer is from 1 to 50 nm. An average thickness of the alternating laminate structure is from 1.5 to 15 &#x3bc;m.

A coated cutting tool comprises a substrate and a coating layer and the coating layer comprises a first laminate structure and a second laminate structure and each of the first laminate structure and the second laminate structure is laminated in an alternating manner and the number of laminations is three or more and one compound layer and other compound layer of the compound layers of two kinds in the each of the first laminate structure and the second laminate structure has a specific composition and the first laminate structure and each of the second laminate structure satisfies a specific condition and an average thickness of each of the layers constituting the first laminate structure and the second laminate structure and an average thickness of the coating layer is respectively a specific one.
