There is provided a variable valve control system for an internal combustion engine, including an intake valve event and lift control mechanism capable of varying an operation angle of an intake valve of the engine; an intake valve timing control mechanism capable of varying a center phase of the operation angle of the intake valve; a detection unit to detect a malfunction in the intake valve timing control mechanism; and a fail-safe unit to control the intake valve event and lift control mechanism upon detection of the malfunction in the intake valve timing control mechanism in such a manner that intake valve opening timing becomes advanced with respect to top dead center.

Variable valve control system and method for internal combustion engine

A variable valve actuating apparatus for an internal combustion engine, includes an intake valve timing control device to vary a center phase of an intake valve operation angle, an exhaust valve timing control device to vary a center phase of an exhaust valve operation angle, and an intake valve operation angle control device to vary an intake valve operation angle of the engine. A fail-safe control system is arranged to detect a malfunction of the exhaust valve timing control device; and to adjust an intake valve opening timing at or after an exhaust valve closing timing of the engine, upon detection of the malfunction, by operating at least one of the intake valve control device and the intake valve operation angle control device.

Variable valve actuating system and method

A variable valve control system for an internal combustion engine includes first and second variable valve control mechanisms capable of varying valve lift characteristics of one of an intake valve and exhaust valve, and a controller that controls the first and second variable valve control mechanisms. The controller includes a detecting section for detecting a malfunction of the first variable valve control mechanism, and a control section that controls the second variable valve control mechanism upon detection of the malfunction of the first variable valve control mechanism so that an intake valve opening timing coincides with or is retarded from an exhaust valve closing timing. Variable valve control system and method for an internal combustion engine

A variable valve operating system for a two-bank engine includes a variable valve-lift and working-angle control mechanism changing at least one of a valve lift and a working angle of each of engine valves arranged in each of cylinder banks, and two variable valve timing control mechanisms provided for each of the banks for changing valve timings independently of each other. A control unit responds a failure in one of the variable valve timing control mechanisms for failsafe purposes. The control unit includes a failsafe section capable of executing a failsafe operating mode in which at least one of the valve lift and the working angle of each of engine valves is increasingly compensated for by the variable valve-lift and working-angle control mechanism, when the one variable valve timing control mechanism is failed.

Variable valve operating system for internal combustion engine

In a hydraulic pressure control system for an engine cylinder cutoff device through which a first group of cylinders are cut off with at least intake valves of engine valves included in the first group kept inactive, while a second group of cylinders are working, the system includes a valve mode switching mechanism being responsive to supply oil pressure for switching an operating mode of at least an intake valve of engine valves of each of the first group of engine cylinders from active to inactive. Also provided is a hydraulic pressure control valve regulating the supply oil pressure. A control unit incorporated in the system sets the supply oil pressure to a predetermined maximum pressure when initiating the inactive mode, and holds the supply oil pressure at a predetermined oil pressure lower than the predetermined maximum pressure before the inactive mode is released.

Hydraulic pressure control system for cylinder cutoff device of internal combustion engine

A hydraulic control system for an internal combustion engine is provided which comprises a first hydraulic operating mechanism and a second hydraulic operating mechanism, the first hydraulic operating mechanism and the second hydraulic operating mechanism being operated independently by oil pressure of a common oil press source, and a circulation line that supplies pressure oil discharged from the first hydraulic operating mechanism to the second hydraulic operating mechanism.
