A strain sensor has a fiber Bragg grating fastened in a one-quarter circular arc to the strain sensing section of a strain sensor member. One end of the fiber Bragg grating is aligned in the longitudinal direction of the strain sensing section, while the other end is aligned at a right angle to the longitudinal direction. When longitudinal stress is applied, the fiber Bragg grating is elongated at one end and compressed at the other end, creating a high degree of chirp, thereby enabling strain to be measured with high sensitivity. The sensitivity is determined partly by Poisson's ratio, and thus is not limited by geometrical constraints on the strain sensing section.

A method of fabricating an optical waveguide device has the steps of forming a Bragg grating by applying ultraviolet light to an optical waveguide to generate photoinduced refractive index changes, and adjusting characteristics of the Bragg grating by applying ultraviolet light for trimming to the optical waveguide. The Bragg grating forming step is executed by applying ultraviolet light to the optical waveguide through a phase mask, and the adjusting step is executed by applying ultraviolet light for trimming to the optical waveguide not through the phase mask.

Method of fabricating optical waveguide device

Light emitted from an array of light-emitting elements in an electrophotographic printer is transmitted through a birefringent plate that deflects light polarized in a first plane but does not deflect light polarized in a second plane perpendicular to the first plane, and through a polarization switching device that is controlled by an electrical signal so as to selectably transmit light polarized in either the first plane or the second plane. The transmitted light illuminates a photosensitive medium. Each light-emitting element can illuminate two dots on the photosensitive medium, depending on the state of the polarization switching device, thereby doubling the dot resolution.

An active-matrix-addressed liquid crystal display includes an active-matrix substrate and an opposing electrode substrate on which opposing electrodes are formed. The opposing electrodes are formed into a combination of stripe electrodes each for collecting an electric field originating from the associated data line conductor, and display electrodes each corresponding to the associated pixel electrode. The stripe electrodes are connected with the associated display electrodes outside display areas. There are provided on the opposing electrode substrate a black mask formed of a photosensitive resin in which pigment of black is dispersed. The opposing electrodes may also be formed in an assembly of stripe electrodes each correspondingly to the associated pixel electrodes, no opposing electrode being disposed above the data line conductor.
