The present invention provides a glass composition that exhibits a fluorescence function and an optical amplification function in a wide wavelength range. This glass composition includes a bismuth oxide, a silicon oxide, an aluminum oxide, and a divalent metal oxide, and the glass composition emits fluorescence in an infrared wavelength region through irradiation of excitation light, with bismuth contained in the bismuth oxide functioning as a fluorescent source.

The present invention provides a glass composition suitable for producing a poling effect. This glass composition includes 0.001 to 0.5 mol % of univalent metal ions in terms of oxide thereof, 0.1 to 40 mol % of AlO, and 0 to 15 mol % of BO, and a ratio of the number of moles of AlOto a sum of moles of oxide in terms of which the univalent metal ions is expressed is at least 1.0. As the univalent metal ions are suitable Li, Na, K, Cs, Ag, Cu, and Au.

A method of bonding respective objects made of different kinds of material to each other is disclosed. The method includes the steps of (A) contacting a bonding material in the fluid state thereof with respective bonding faces of the respective objects to be bonded, (B) mechanically abrading portions of the respective bonding faces contacting the bonding material to be bonded to each other, (C) setting the respective objects fixed in a predetermined position relative to each other while maintaining the respective objects in contact with the bonding material in the fluid state thereof, and (D) solidifying the bonding material to bond the respective objects to each other. An ultraviolet and infrared radiation absorbing glass is disclosed, which has a bronze or neutral gray tint, a low ultraviolet transmission, and a low total solar energy transmission and is suitable for use as a window glass for motor vehicles or buildings.
