In a variable displacement compressor of the invention, cylinder bores (111) and a crankcase (121) are formed in a housing, single-ended pistons (37) are fitted in the cylinder bores (111), and a cam plate (23) is provided in the crankcase (121). The displacement capacity of the compressor is varied by controlling the angle of inclination of the cam plate (23) in accordance with the difference between the internal pressure of the crankcase (121) and an suction pressure present on both sides of each single-ended piston (37). A dampening or muffler chamber (65) is provided downstream of an output channel (114) through which a refrigerant gas discharged from the cylinder bores (111) passes. A check valve (69) which opens and closes in accordance with a pressure difference between upstream and downstream sides of the output channel (114) is provided in the output channel (114), upstream of the muffler chamber (65). The present invention reduces the effects of pressure pulsations caused by the compression motion of the compressor and caused by the valve body of the open/close device hunting, has no bad effects on the external refrigerant circuit connected to the compressor, and increases the reliability of the lip seal.

A piston for use in a compressor that compresses gas containing lubricating oil is disclosed. The compressor has a crank chamber and cylinder bores for accommodating the pistons. A swash plate is located in the crank chamber and is supported on a drive shaft for integrally rotating with the drive shaft. The swash plate is operably connected to the pistons by shoes to convert the rotation of the drive shaft to reciprocation of each piston. Each piston has a head for compressing the gas supplied to the cylinder bore and a skirt projecting from the head toward the crank chamber. The skirt has a slot for receiving the swash plate by means of the shoes. A rib is formed on an inner wall of the slot and extends parallel to the axis of the piston. When the swash plate rotates, swirling gas in the crank chamber collides against the rib. When the gas collides against the rib, the oil contained in the gas separates from the gas and is guided to the shoes.

A piston for use in a compressor that compresses gas containing lubricating oil is disclosed. The compressor includes a housing having a crank chamber and cylinder bores, and a swash plate located in the crank chamber. The swash plate is operably connected to the pistons by shoes to convert the rotation of a drive shaft to the reciprocation of each piston. Each piston has a head for compressing the gas supplied to the cylinder bore and a skirt projecting from the head toward the crank chamber. The skirt is connected to the swash plate. A restrictor is provided on the skirt to prevent the piston from rotating in the cylinder bore. The restrictor has a pair of arched surfaces slidably contacting an inner surface of the housing and a recessed surface located between the arched surfaces and free from contact with the inner surface. The recessed surface defines a gap for allowing passage of the oil between the recessed surface and the inner surface. The gap leads the oil in the crank chamber toward the shoes when the piston moves from a top dead center position to a bottom dead center position.

A removable sealing plug device for protecting the interior of a refrigerant compressor from dust, dirt, and corrosion during storage and/or transport of the compressor before it is assembled into a refrigerating system, including a plug element made of a rubber material and having a body portion adapted to being sealingly fitted in an inlet and/or outlet port of the compressor and a columnar head portion formed in an upper face of the body portion, and a base plate element having a through-bore in which the columnar head of the plug element is fitted with an interference fit, the base plate being secured to the outer circumference of the compressor, by using an existing threaded hole and a screw bolt, to hold the plug element between the base plate element and the outer circumference of the compressor. The plug element of the sealing plug device is provided with a handle portion extending laterally from the body portion thereof to permit the sealing plug device to be easily removed from the inlet port and/or outlet port of the compressor.

A variable displacement compressor includes an inclining swash plate connected to a drive shaft. A rotor rotates integrally with the drive shaft. A guiding mechanism is provided between the swash plate and the rotor to guide the inclination of tho swash plate between a minimum inclination position and a maximum inclination position and thus change the stroke of the piston. An abutment is provided to restrict the inclination of the swash plate. In another embodiment, a cap included in the guiding mechanism determines the maximum inclination position of the swash plate. In one embodiment, the maximum inclination position is determined by the length of a spring arranged between the swash plate and the rotor. In another embodiment, a spacer is arranged between the swash plate and the rotor. The thickness of the spacer determines the maximum inclination position. The maximum displacement of the compressor can be changed by changing only one part.

The hinge unit K of a variable capacity swash plate type compressor has support arms protruded to the back side of a rotor on the rotating drive shaft, and guide pins, one end of which is fixed to a rotatable and wobbling swash plate. The support arms have guide holes (guide surfaces) which extend in a predetermined direction having an angle .alpha. with respect to an axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the drive shaft. Sections perpendicular to the center lines L.sub.1 of the guide holes are formed into at least a partial circle. A spherical elements of the guide pins are slidably and rotatably engaged with the guide holes of the support arms to be in line contact with the guide surface of the guide holes. The angle .alpha. is set so that the top clearance TC of the respective pistons at both maximum and minimum compression capacities of the compressor is equivalent.

Disclosed is a compressor having a drive shaft in a crank chamber and a swash plate supported on the drive shaft for integral rotation therewith to drive a piston in a cylinder bore. The piston compresses gas sucked from a suction chamber into the cylinder bore and discharges the compressed gas to a discharge chamber and the amount of the discharged gas is variable between a minimum and maximum values based on variation of the inclined angle of the swash plate between a minimum and maximum values. The compressor comprises a passage for leading the gas into the crank chamber from the discharge chamber to alter the inclined angle of the swash plate, a valve for selectively opening and closing the passage to lead the gas into the crank chamber via the passage when the valve opens the passage, and a control apparatus for controlling the inclined angle of the swash plate, which operates in accordance with the operation of the valve to hold the swash plate at the minimum inclined angle when the valve means opens the passage.

A compressor includes a rotary drive shaft having a first end and a second end, both the ends being rotatably supported by opposing walls of a crank chamber defined in a casing and a swash plate tiltably mounted on the drive shaft and operably coupled with a piston in a cylinder bore. An oil diverting unit, incorporated in a compressor housing of a refrigerant compressor for a climate control system of an automobile, cooperating with a shaft seal unit mounted on a drive shaft of the compressor, so as to divert a flow of the lubricating oil which was suspended in the refrigerant gas and has leaked out of the interior of the compressor housing, to thereby prevent the lubricating oil from reaching a solenoid clutch mounted on a front portion of the drive shaft of the compressor. The oil diverting unit has an oil blocking plate member made of elastic material so that the plate member is elastically press-fitted in the compressor housing so as to define an oil dam for holding the lubricating oil and permitting the oil to be drained from the dam through a drain passageway toward the exterior of the compressor housing.

A variable-capacity swash plate type compressor including a tiltable swash plate and a rotor supported by a drive shaft and connected to the swash plate by a hinge mechanism for controlling the tilting angle of the swash plate to change the capacity of the compressor. The hinge mechanism includes a pair of support arms extending from the rotor on either side of the top dead center position of the swash plate having holes, and a pair of guide pins extending from the swash plate and having balls fitted in the holes of the support arms. The holes are circular holes having different diameters. Alternatively, the holes are a circular hole and an oblong hole having a long width in the rotating direction.

Tiltable swash plate type compressor

A variable capacity type swash plate compressor includes a novel hinge means. The hinge means includes a supporter arm, a main guide pin, and an auxiliary guide pin. The supporter arm is disposed on the rotor projectably therefrom toward the swinging swash plate, and has a main guide hole extending perpendicularly with the driving shaft. The main guide pin is inserted rotatably into the main guide hole. The auxiliary guide pin is inserted slidably into a hole, formed in one of the main guide pin and the swinging swash plate, perpendicularly with the main guide pin at one end, and it is fixed to another one of the main guide pin and the swinging swash plate at the other end. With the hinge means, the top clearances of the pistons can be always maintained virtually uniformly, and the moments resulting from the compression reactive forces can be inhibited from interfering with the discharge capacity control. Additionally, the compressor can attain the reduction in the manufacturing costs.
