Provided is an ultraviolet light irradiation device that is capable of causing effective inactivation of microorganisms as well as a method of using the ultraviolet light irradiation device. An ultraviolet light irradiation device includes a light source that radiates ultraviolet light with a wavelength in a range of 190 nm to 235 nm; a housing that houses the light source; an extracting portion that extracts the ultraviolet light that is radiated from the light source and causes it to be directed toward an exterior of the housing; and a diffusing member that diffuses the ultraviolet light.

The startability of an ultraviolet ray generation device including an excimer lamp as an ultraviolet light source is to be improved. An ultraviolet ray generation device includes: an excimer lamp having a discharge container in which a discharge gas is sealed; a first electrode body and a second electrode body that are disposed so as not to be exposed to the discharge gas; and a first conductor electrically connected to one of the first electrode body and the second electrode body. The first conductor faces the other electrode body or a second conductor electrically connected to the other electrode body, through a dielectric member. The first conductor causes an atmospheric discharge around the first conductor.

Ultraviolet ray generation device

In the excimer lamp according to the present invention, a flat discharge vessel having a substantially rectangular cross-sectional shape and comprising a pair of planar parts and a pair of side-surface parts has a pair of external electrodes disposed on the respective outer surfaces of the planar parts. The end parts of the external electrodes are provided with an auxiliary electrode extending to a region that is made smaller than the distance between the planar parts. A lead that supplies electricity to the external electrode is connected to the auxiliary electrode in the region that is made smaller than the distance between the planar parts.

To avoid a decline in the reflectivity of an ultraviolet reflection film caused by lighting for an extended period of time and providing a uniform illuminance an excimer lamp has a silica glass discharge vessel with electrodes on opposite sides of the discharge vessel, wherein excimer discharge is generated in the discharge space of the discharge vessel, wherein an ultraviolet reflection film made of silica particles and alumina particles is formed on a surface exposed to the discharge space and wherein the mean particle diameter of silica particles is at least 0.67 times as large as the mean particle diameter of the alumina particles. The alumina particles in the ultraviolet reflection film preferably constitute at least 5 wt % and more preferably at least 10 wt % of the sum of silica particles and alumina particles.

Excimer lamps

An excimer lamp, including a discharge vessel made of silica glass and having a discharge space; a pair of electrodes disposed on the discharge vessel, wherein the discharge space is filled with xenon gas; and an ultraviolet reflection film made from ultraviolet scattering particles, including silica particles and alumina particles, formed on a surface of the discharge vessel exposed to the discharge space. A thickness Y of the ultraviolet reflection film satisfies the expression Y&#x3e;4X+5, given that a mean particle diameter of the ultraviolet scattering particles making up the ultraviolet reflection film is X (&#x3bc;m).

An excimer lamp which can emit UV radiation with a high degree of efficiency and high degree of uniformity, has a UV-reflecting film that does not peel. The excimer lamp is fitted with a silica glass discharge vessel that encloses a discharge gas which forms excimer molecules by dielectric barrier discharge in an internal space enclosed by a top wall panel, a bottom wall panel, side wall panels and end panels and with an electrode on both the outer surface of the top wall panel and another electrode on the outer surface of the bottom wall panel. On the inner surface of the discharge vessel, a UV-reflecting film comprised of silica and alumina particles is formed, at least, on the inner surface area of the side wall panels with the silica particles composing at least 30 weight % of the UV-reflecting film.

Light source device using optical fibers

A filament lamp for an emission of yellow light, with a color film which is formed on the surface of the bulb, where the color film is essentially composed of a combined oxide of titanium, nickel and antimony. The color film may have a ratio of titanium, nickel and antimony to one another in a weight ratio of 5.6 to 8.6:3.6 to 6.6:1.0 to 1.8. Also, the color film may be a sintered coating formed by admixing a solution A produced by dissolving a nickel salt and an antimony salt in an organic solvent, addition of a titanium alkoxide and reaction of the reaction mixture; and addition of a stabilizer which forms a chelate with titanium with a solution B produced in substantially the same manner as solution A. The solutions A and B contain nickel nitrate-6-hydrate, antimony trioxide, tetraisopropoxy titanium, acetyl acetone, and/or water.
