Provided is the so-called agent imparting the distinctness of image, namely, an additive for an aqueous coating material that can improve the distinctness of image of the coating film of any glossy aqueous coating material in order to prevent the white blurring phenomenon, which is caused by diffuse reflection of light, to a degree that could not be previously achieved, by increasing the dispersivity of a carbon black or an organic pigment in a coating material resin. Catecholic polymer black microparticles that exhibit an angle-independent structural color are used as the agent imparting the distinctness of image.

A defoaming agent which can effectively eliminate foams generated in the occasions of preparation, coating, drying and baking of water-based paint, by addition thereof by itself, without combined use of other kind(s) of defoaming agent(s), and furthermore without impairing appearance of baked coated film of the paint or recoatability of the paint is provided. Such a defoaming agent for water-based paint has the composition comprising (1) polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil triisostearates and (2) polyalkyl vinyl ether, polybutadiene, polybutene or polyisoprene, which are dissolved in (3) liquid normal paraffin, liquid isoparaffin or liquid cycloparaffin, at such a ratio that the blended amount of (1) occupies 2-90% by weight of the total composition.

Defoaming agent for water-based paint

The invention provides novel defoamers which are useful as defoamers for top coat paints for motor vehicles. When the defoamers are incorporated with paints which do not use melamine resins as the curing agent, they can impart defoaming property to the paints without inviting turbidity in the painted films caused by infiltration of water. Hence the defoamers are particularly useful when used for baking finish type clear top coat paints for motor vehicles. The defoamer is characterized by comprising a copolymer of 2-50% by weight of (A) a polymerizable monomer capable of forming a copolymer having isocyanate groups which can react with a binder resin in thermosetting type paint or (b) a polymerizable monomer capable of forming a copolymer having the groups which produce isocyanate groups reactable with a binder resin in thermosetting type paint during the baking step of the same paint, and 98-50% by weight of (C) a monomer or polymer conventionally used for defoamers.

Provided is a flow-and-leveling agent for waterborne coatings which provides the coated surface with a flow-and-leveling property by blending into waterborne coatings taking a serious view of finishing and which improves coating defects such as ruptures and craters to contribute to a rise in the appearance of the coating film. The above flow-and-leveling agent is an acryl base copolymer containing a trimethylsilyl group in a proportion of 2 to 64% by weight and has a number average molecular weight of 500 to 30000.

Flow-and-leveling agents for waterborne coatings

Provided are flow-and-leveling agents for powder coatings which provide the coated surfaces with a flow-and-leveling property by blending into powder coatings taking a serious view of finishing and which improves coating defects such as ruptures and craters to contribute to a rise in the appearance in powder coating. The above flow-and-leveling agents are (meth)acrylic acid ester base copolymers containing a trimethylsilyl group in a proportion of 2 to 65% by weight and having a number average molecular weight of 1000 to 60000.

Flow-and-leveling agents for powder coatings

Additives for paints and inks which are suitable to be blended in paints and inks for high quality finishing are provided. The additive is characterized by comprising a copolymer having a number-average molecular weight of from 1,000 to 60,000 which is obtained by copolymerizing 2-50% by weight of reactive monomer containing in its molecule polydimethylsiloxane having a degree of polymerization of 5 to 100 with 98-50% by weight of reactive monomers which have been heretofore used as flow-and-leveling agents for paints and inks. When minor amounts of those additives are incorporated in paints or inks, drawbacks on painted or printed planes caused by environmental staining substances are prevented and the appearance of the painted or printed objects is improved.
