There is provided a heat exchanger realizing downsizing, weight saving, and cost reduction in comparison with a conventional heat exchange element or heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is provided with a first fluid flow portion formed of a honeycomb structure having a plurality of cells partitioned by ceramic partition walls and extending from one end face to another end face in an axial direction to allow a heating medium as a first fluid to flow therein, and a second fluid flow portion formed of a casing containing the honeycomb structure therein, the casing having an inlet and an outlet for a second fluid, and the second fluid flowing on an outer peripheral face of the honeycomb structure to receive heat from the first fluid.

Heat exchanger

Provided is an engine combustion chamber structure. Also provided is an inner wall structure for a through channel, through which exhaust gas or intake gas of the engine passes. An engine combustion engine structure is provided with a heat-insulating member on the inner wall of an engine constituent member which constitutes an engine combustion chamber, the heat-insulating member containing a heat-insulating porous layer formed from ceramics, and a surface dense layer formed on the surface of the heat-insulating porous layer and formed from ceramics. The surface dense layer of the heat-insulating member has an open porosity of 5% or less, and preferably the heat-insulating porous layer has a larger open porosity than the open porosity of the surface dense layer.

Engine combustion chamber structure, and inner wall structure of through channel

There is disclosed a heater which does not excessively heat a lubricating fluid but can rapidly raise a temperature of the lubricating fluid, even when a size thereof is small. A heater includes a honeycomb structure section including partition walls which contain a ceramic as a main component and generate heat by electrical conduction, and a plurality of cells which are partitioned and formed by the partition walls and extend through the honeycomb structure section from one end to another end to become through channels of a lubricating fluid; and a pair of electrodes which become an anode and a cathode to come in contact with the honeycomb structure section, thereby conducting the electricity through the partition walls of the honeycomb structure section.

Heater

There is provided a honeycomb filter obtained by bonding, into one piece, a plurality of honeycomb segments comprising partition walls having filtering function, and a number of through-holes divided from each other by the partition walls and extending in an axial direction. Predetermined through-holes are plugged at one end face of the filter, and the remaining through-holes are plugged at the other end face of the filter. The honeycomb filter is characterized in that the honeycomb segment disposed in a peripheral portion of the honeycomb filter has a lower average bulk density than that of the honeycomb segment disposed in a central portion.

Honeycomb filter

A honeycomb filter of the present invention is a honeycomb filterincluding a number of through-holessurrounded by partition walls and extending through an axial direction, in which the partition walls have filterability, predetermined through-holesare plugged at one end portion, and the remaining through-holesare plugged at the other end portion to trap particulate matter contained in a dust-containing fluid. The honeycomb filter is characterized in that a heat capacity of a central partis set to be larger than that of a peripheral partin a section of the honeycomb filterperpendicular to the axial direction. There is provided a honeycomb filter in which a crack is not generated by thermal stress during use, especially at a regeneration time and which is superior in durability.

There are disclosed an exhaust emission control system including an internal combustion engine, a filter, and an exhaust pipe, a method of manufacturing a filter suitable for the system, and a method of calculating a pressure loss. The system comprises combustion means for intermittently burning particulate matters arrested by the filter, the filter includes porous partition walls extending from one end face to the other end face thereof, and a large number of through channels partitioned by the partition walls, predetermined through channels are sealed at either of the end faces, and assuming that a partition wall thickness is (X) &#x3bc;m, and the number of through channels per unit area in a cross section vertical to a longitudinal direction of the through channels is (Y) cells/cm, X and Y come within a range surrounded by straight lines connecting points A, B, C, and Din this order in FIG.in the exhaust emission control system. There are provided the exhaust emission control system, the method of manufacturing the filter, and the method of calculating the pressure loss by the filter with good accuracy in which a temperature gradient produced in the filter at the time of regeneration is suppressed while suppressing a rise of the pressure loss by the filter and which are accordingly superior in reliability.

A honeycomb structure includes a plurality of honeycomb segments each having a number of throughholes divided from each other by partition walls and extending in the axial direction of honeycomb segment, wherein the honeycomb segments are bonded at their surfaces parallel to the axial direction to form an integrated body, such that the honeycomb segments comprise those honeycomb segments in which the outer portion 6 has a larger per-unit-volume heat capacity than the central portion does.

Honeycomb structure

An electrode structure includes: a metallic electrode; a case for accommodating and holding the electrode, and one end of a lead wire connecting to the electrode; and an insulating member interposed between the electrode and the case in order to ensure insulation between the electrode and the case, in which structure a waterproof member is interposed between the case and the lead wire in order to prevent the incoming of water from between the case and the lead wire, and an electric heater havinging the above electrode structure. An electrode structure of an electric heater, includes: a first electrode; a second electrode of a cylinder shape, having a base portion connected with the first electrode and a top end portion connected with a lead wire; an insulating member having a thermal resistance, pierced by the second electrode; an elastic insulator having a thermal resistance, covering at least a portion of the second electrode; a case for accommodating and holding the second electrode, having a predetermined length L; and a rubber sealing member attached to the top end of the case. The electrode structure is preferably used by connecting to a conductive substance accommodated in a metallic housing, to apply electricity to the conductive substance. The conductive substance is preferably a metallic honeycomb structure. The given length L mentioned above is preferably L.gtoreq.40 mm.

Electrode structure and electric heater comprising the same

An electrode structure includes a metallic electrode having a configuration of a bending cylinder and having a plurality of members disposed successively in an axial direction of the electrode and mutually connected with adjacent member(s); a case for installing the metallic electrode and one end of a lead wire for electrification therein; and an insulating member which is positioned between the case and the electrode and which the case from the electrode. An electric heater includes a housing, a honeycomb structure installed in the housing, and the electrode structure for electrifying the honeycomb structure. The electrode structure exhibits excellent composability, waterproof ability, and gas sealability.

Electrode structure and electric heater

A catalytic converter includes a housing, a honeycomb heater fixed to inside the housing, and a catalytic element disposed downstream of the honeycomb heater. The honeycomb heater has a first honeycomb structure made of metal having a first partition wall having a plurality of first throughholes, and at least one electrode for electrifying the first honeycomb structure. The catalytic element fixed to inside the housing and disposed downstream of the honeycomb heater has a second honeycomb structure having a second partition wall having a plurality of second throughholes, and a catalytic compound loaded on the second honeycomb structure. A horizontal cross-section of the honeycomb structure is made smaller than that of the honeycomb structure. Further, a gap between an outflow end surface of the honeycomb structure and an inflow end surface of the honeycomb structure is made large. According to the catalytic converter, a durability of a honeycomb structure, particularly resistance against vibrations extending over a long period of time can be improved while maintaining an exhaust gas purification ability under severe driving conditions. Further, according to the present invention, the temperature of a honeycomb heater can be raised in a short period of time.

Catalytic converter

An electrically heatable honeycomb body includes a large number of passages which are defined by partition walls made of an electroconductive material and which are substantially parallel to the direction of a gas flowing through the honeycomb body, and two ends which are the gas inlet and outlet sides of honeycomb body. At least one slit is formed to control, upon electrification of honeycomb body, the flow of electricity therein and consequently the heat generation therein. In order to make lower the temperature of the end of each outer slit close to each of the electrodes attached to the honeycomb body, than the temperature of the center of honeycomb body or the temperature of the end of each inner slit, the thickness of partition walls is made larger at the intersection points of partition walls, in the passages surrounding said end of each outer slit, or the cell number between two adjacent slits is made larger in outer slits close to each of the electrodes attached to the honeycomb body, than in inner slits. This honeycomb body can prevent cell rupture from occurring during repeated electrification and has excellent durability.

A honeycomb heater includes a honeycomb structure made of an electroconductive material having slits for resistance adjustment and electrodes fitted thereto for electrification thereof. The slits are formed in the honeycomb structure in such a manner that parallel electric circuits are formed in the honeycomb structure upon electrification of the structure. This honeycomb heater with slits has a low resistance and excellent durability to repeated electrification, and is suitable for use with a battery.

An exhaust gas purification system for an internal combustion engine is herein disclosed which comprises an exhaust system having an adsorption flow path provided with an adsorbent capable of adsorbing harmful components such as hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas, and a catalyst flow path provided with at least one catalyst for decreasing the harmful components in the exhaust gas, the exhaust gas purification system being characterized in that an outlet of the adsorption flow path is joined to the catalyst flow path at a predetermined position on the upstream side of the catalyst to form a joint portion; the exhaust gas produced at least at the time of the operation start of the internal combustion engine is divided so as to flow through both the adsorption flow path and the catalyst flow path in a predetermined ratio, so that part of harmful components such as the hydrocarbons are adsorbed by the adsorbent in the adsorption flow path; and when the adsorbed harmful components begin to desorb from the adsorbent with the temperature rise of the adsorbent, the catalyst on the downstream of the joint portion is activated.

Exhaust gas purification system and exhaust gas purification method

An electrically heatable honeycomb body includes a plurality of passages which are each defined by partition walls made of an electroconductive material and which are substantially parallel to the direction of a gas flowing through the honeycomb body, and two ends which are the gas inlet and outlet sides of honeycomb body, wherein the heat generation of the honeycomb body by electrification is controlled by adjusting the flow of electricity therein and wherein those cells each constituted by a passage and partition walls, present in the vicinity of each current-concentrating portion are formed in such a structure that the stress caused by current concentration can be reduced. This honeycomb body can reduce the stress caused by current concentration and thereby can prevent the rupture of its cells.

Electrically heatable honeycomb body

A structure of an electrode unit for applying electricity to a conductible substance (4) installed in a metallic housing (2) has a metallic electrode (6) connected to a portion of the conductible substance (4), an insulating member (8, 8') positioned between the electrode (6) and the metallic housing (2), and a metallic sealing material (10,10') to be transformed by fastening a nut so as to secure sealability between the electrode (6) and the insulating member (8) and between the metallic housing (2) and the insulating member (8). The structure of an electrode unit is excellent in an insulating property and a gas sealability between the metallic housing (2) and electrode (6) and therefore has high reliability.
