An electrochemical cell for a lithium battery includes a negative electrode, a positive electrode, a polymeric separator, and composite flame retardant particles including a particulate host material and a flame retardant material carried by the particulate host material. The composite flame retardant particles may be positioned within the electrochemical cell along a lithium-ion transport path or an electron transport path that extends through or between one or more components of the electrochemical cell. The composite flame retardant particles may be positioned within polymeric portions of a laminate structure that defines a housing in which the electrochemical cell is enclosed.

The present disclosure relates to over-lithiated positive electroactive materials for use within an electrochemical cell. For example, the electrochemical cell includes a positive electrode that includes an over-lithiated positive electroactive material that includes one of LiMnO(where 1.05&#x2264;x&#x2264;1.30) and LiMnNiO(where 0&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.5). The electrochemical cell can include a negative electrode that includes a silicon-containing negative electroactive material having a Columbic Efficiency greater than or equal to about 80% and less than or equal to about 90%.

Over-lithiated cathode material

An electrode including an electrode active material and a ceramic hydrofluoric acid (HF) scavenger is provided. The ceramic hydrofluoric acid (HF) scavenger includes MSiO, MAlO, MO&#x2014;AlO&#x2014;SiO, or combinations thereof, where M is lithium (Li), sodium (Na), or combinations thereof. Methods of making the electrode are also provided.

Electrode additives and coatings for minimizing cathode transition metal dissolution

A capacitor-assisted, solid-state lithium-ion battery is formed by replacing at least one of the electrodes of the battery with a capacitor electrode of suitable particulate composition for the replaced battery particulate anode or cathode material. The solid-state electrodes typically contain solid-state electrode material and are separated with solid-state electrode material. In another embodiment the capacitor anode or cathode particles may be mixed with lithium-ion battery anode or cathode particles respectively. Preferably, the battery comprises at least two positively-charged electrodes and two negatively-charged electrodes, and the location and compositions of the capacitor material electrode(s) may be selected to provide a desired combination of energy and power.

Capacitor-assisted solid-state battery

A battery includes a first mono cell formed from a first electrode foil having a first body and a first tab, and a first coating. The first body has long edges and short edges, and a length-to-width ratio of the first body is at least five. The first tab extends from one of the long edges of the first body entirely between one of the short edges a midpoint of the long edge. A second electrode foil has similar structure to the first electrode foil and coating, but a second tab is aligned opposite the first tab along the short edges. A second mono cell has similar structure. A third tab and a fourth tab of the second mono cell are on an opposing side of the midpoint of the long edges from the first tab and the second tab.

Battery cell with increased tab area and method and apparatus for manufacturing same

A method of forming batteries includes feeding a foil through a coating machine. The movement of the foil defines a foil direction. The method applies a first coating band and a second coating band to the foil. The second coating band is spaced from the first coating band by a first tab gap. The foil is cut substantially perpendicular to the foil direction to separate a first coated blank. The first coated blank is cut separate the first coating band and a first portion of the first tab gap, and to separate the second coating band and a second portion of the first tab gap. A first electrode is formed from the first coating band and the first portion of the first tab gap, and a second electrode is formed from the second coating band and the second portion of the first tab gap.

A capacitor-assisted, solid-state lithium-ion battery is formed by replacing at least one of the electrodes of the battery with a capacitor electrode of suitable particulate composition for the replaced battery particulate anode or cathode material. The solid-state electrodes typically contain quasi-solid-state electrode material and are separated with a layer of quasi-solid-state electrolyte material. In another embodiment the capacitor anode or cathode particles may be mixed with lithium-ion battery anode or cathode particles respectively. Preferably, the battery comprises at least two positively-charged electrodes and two negatively-charged electrodes, and the location, number and compositions of the capacitor material electrode(s) may be selected to provide a desired combination of energy and power.

Capacitor-assisted solid-state battery with quasi-solid-state electrolyte

A rechargeable lithium-ion battery disclosed herein comprises a positive electrode with a positive electroactive material that in a charged state comprises lithium iron (II) orthosilicate (LiFeSiO) and in a discharged state comprises FeSiOor LiFeSiO. A negative electrode comprises phosphorene. A separator is disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. An electrolyte has an organic solvent especially containing ether-based organic solvents and a lithium salt that provides a conductive medium for lithium ions to transfer between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. Such a rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides advantageous power delivery, long driving ranges, and fast charge to enhance widespread use of batteries, especially in vehicles. Furthermore, lithium plating can be minimized or avoided, even at low temperature charging. Methods of recharging a rechargeable lithium-ion battery at low temperatures are also disclosed.

Rechargeable lithium-ion battery chemistry with fast charge capability and high energy density

A battery cell has positive and negative cell tabs protruding from a first edge and a cell stack-up within a pouch. Anode and cathode foils are connected to the cell tabs proximate the first edge, with the anode foils connected to each other proximate a second edge. An outermost current collector of the anode foils exists with respect to a thickness of the cell stack-up. The cathode foils are connected to the positive cell tab proximate the first edge. The anode foils are connected to each other and the negative cell tab proximate the second edge, such that the outermost current collector forms an internal bus bar between the first and second edges. The battery cell has asymmetrical packaging and symmetrical internal current paths. A system includes a battery pack driving a load, with the battery pack having battery cells constructed as set forth above.

To make a pouch format cell, an outermost stack (including a negative electrode and separators positioned on opposed surfaces thereof) is formed. An inner stack is formed, including a positive electrode and a sub-stack (i.e., another negative electrode with separators positioned on opposed surfaces thereof and another positive electrode). The inner stack is positioned on the outermost stack to form a core stack, such that i) one inner stack end substantially aligns with one outermost stack end, ii) another end and a portion of the outermost stack remain exposed, and iii) the inner stack positive electrode is adjacent to one of the outermost stack separators. The outermost stack exposed portion is folded around another inner stack end and to cover a portion of an outer layer of the inner stack. This forms an initial overlay. The core stack is folded around at least a portion of the initial overlay.

Making a pouch format cell and attaching a tab to an electrode

An electrochemical cell of a secondary lithium ion battery includes lithium ion-exchanged zeolite particles or 'lithiated zeolite particles' positioned along at least a portion of a lithium ion transport path through the electrochemical cell. The lithiated zeolite particles may be positioned within the lithium ion transport path through the electrochemical cell, for example, by being distributed throughout an electrolyte disposed between confronting anterior surfaces of a negative electrode and a positive electrode. Additionally or alternatively, the lithiated zeolite particles may be positioned within the lithium ion transport path through the electrochemical cell by being distributed throughout or deposited as a coating layer on the negative electrode, the positive electrode, and/or a porous separator sandwiched between the confronting anterior surfaces of the negative and positive electrodes.

The present disclosure provides a battery pack component including a self-healing coating. The self-healing coating is disposed on at least a portion of a surface of the battery pack component. The self-healing coating includes a first precursor including a cyclic ether capable of reacting in a self-healing cationic ring-opening polymerization reaction. The self-healing coating further includes an initiator including an alkali metal salt. The self-healing cationic ring-opening polymerization reaction occurs when a defect is present in the self-healing coating. In certain aspects, the cyclic ether may include 1,3-dioxolane (CHO) and the initiator may include lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FNaNOS). In other aspects, the self-healing coating may include a second precursor that is capable of copolymerizing with the first precursor. In still other aspects, the present disclosure provides a method of making a self-healing coating for a battery pack component.

Living cationic ring-opening polymerization (c-ROP) self healing coating for battery module packaging in electric vehicles (EV)

A method of manufacturing a lithium ion battery cell. A non-aqueous liquid electrolyte solution is placed in contact with particles of a lithium ion-exchanged zeolite material for a time sufficient to remove water molecules from the liquid electrolyte solution. Thereafter, the liquid electrolyte solution may be introduced into an electrochemical cell assembly and hermetically sealed within a cell casing to form a lithium ion battery cell.

Method of manufacturing lithium ion battery cells

A system for forming an electrode for a lithium-ion battery cell includes an electrode material, a material-supply mechanism, a wetting mechanism, a debris-generating tool, and a conditioner. The material-supply mechanism is configured to deliver the electrode material. The wetting mechanism is configured to receive the electrode material from the material-supply mechanism and apply a solution to the electrode material to produce a wet precursor. The debris-generating tool is configured to remove a portion of the electrode material from the wet precursor to form a pre-electrode. The conditioner is configured to eliminate the solution from the pre-electrode and thereby form the electrode.

Systems and methods for lithium-ion cell manufacturing to reduce cell contamination

Lithium battery cells, and battery packs comprising the same, include an electrolyte, and an anode and a cathode, each of which include a current collector having a length, the length defining a first end and a second end, a width, a host or active material disposed on the current collector between the first end and the second end, a first tab extending from the first end, a second tab extending from the second end, a first electron obstruction extending lengthwise inward from the first end, and optionally a second electron obstruction extending lengthwise inward from the second end. Electron obstructions comprises an area in which electron flow is precluded or only minimally facilitated. A plurality of cells can be stacked in a planar configuration, and a plurality of anode and cathode tabs can be connected via respective busbars. The battery cell can be a power source for an electric/hybrid vehicle.
