A multi-panel electronic device and method are disclosed. In a particular embodiment, a method includes receiving first acceleration data from a first sensor coupled to a first portion of an electronic device. The method further includes receiving second acceleration data from a second sensor coupled to a second portion of the electronic device, where a position of the first portion is movable with respect to a position of the second portion. The method further includes determining a configuration of the electronic device at least partially based on the first acceleration data and the second acceleration data.

Techniques for providing directional force induction in a handheld device for use in, e.g., personal navigation applications. In an exemplary embodiment, a magnetic element is provided on a mechanical support fixedly attached to a chassis of the handheld device. One or more conducting coils surround the support. Current is generated in the one or more conducting coils to accelerate the magnetic element relative to the support, causing a tactilely perceptible force to a user of the handheld device due to the recoil of the chassis from the movement of the magnetic element. In an exemplary embodiment, passive movement of the magnetic element due to, e.g., physical jostling of the handheld device, may be used to deliver energy back to the system for energy harvesting.

Handheld device force induction

Force feedback in a gaming controller is provided by a motion induction device having an untethered mass. The mass is accelerated and decelerated to provide directional force feedback to a user of the gaming controller. The forces may be applied in a game controller shaped to simulate a tennis racquet, baseball bat, gun, steering wheel, or golf club. A sensor may be included in the game controller to provide information for adapting the force feedback. For example, in a game controller simulating a golf club an accelerometer may measure the speed and motion of the golf club, and the game controller provides force feedback through the motion induction device to simulate impact with a golf club or train a user to swing in a desired motion.

Inducing force into a non-anchored gaming device

Methods, systems, and devices are described for providing flexible bandwidth waveforms and channels for wireless communication. Embodiments may utilize portions of spectrum that may not be large enough to fit a standard or normal waveform. Chip rates may be adapted dynamically to generate and/or to receive flexible bandwidth waveforms to fit these portions of spectrum. Scaling factors and/or center frequencies may also be utilized to generate flexible waveforms. A mobile device may receive adjustment information from a base station so that the mobile device may dynamically adjust its chip rate to utilize a flexible bandwidth channel. A base station may simultaneously transmit on a normal bandwidth channel and a flexible bandwidth channel in some cases. Some flexible bandwidth waveforms may be utilized that are larger, or take more bandwidth, than a normal waveform. Flexible bandwidth may also be utilized to split and/or combine frequency channels.

Adaptive flexible bandwidth wireless systems

At least one feature provides a way to perform point-to-multipoint transmissions using adaptive or directional antennas while reducing antenna pattern distortion. Generally, rather than transmitting the same waveform to two or more receivers, an information-bearing signal is transformed into different decorrelated waveforms and each decorrelated waveform is transmitted to a different receiver. In one implementation, an information-bearing signal is transformed into two decorrelated signals such that their crosscorrelation, or autocorrelation of the information-bearing signal, is zero or very small. Such decorrelation may be achieved by sending a first signal to a first receiver while sending a second signal, having a radio frequency spectrum that is the spectrally inverted version of the first signal, to a second receiver. In another implementation, a first signal is transmitted to a first receiver and is also transmitted to a second receiver with a time delay.

Antenna array pattern distortion mitigation

Various schemes are provided that facilitate a communication handoff from a current base station to a target base station. One feature provides for reducing the search space that a base station searches by providing it with the position/location and/or velocity of an access terminal with which it attempts to communicate. Having the position and/or velocity of the access terminal, a current or target base station is able to reduce its search space (e.g., direction, frequency range, and/or time window) for the access terminal. Another feature provides for selectively and gradually increasing the power of a pilot signal originating from the access terminal during the handoff acquisition period to a target base station. By increasing the pilot signal power, the base station has a better chance of acquiring the signal and do so more quickly.

Techniques for facilitating communication handoffs

A system and method for narrowing the range of frequency uncertainty of a Doppler shifted pilot signal in a satellite or other communications system with relative signal source and receiver motion. The satellite communications system includes a user terminal (for example, a mobile wireless telephone), a gateway (terrestrial base station), and at least one satellite with unknown position and unknown relative velocity. The method includes the steps of shifting the pilot signal over a plurality of frequency hypotheses, coherently accumulating samples of the pilot signal over a plurality of chips, measuring the energy of the accumulated pilot signal samples, accumulating the energy measurements over a plurality of chips to produce an energy accumulation value, and determining which of the plurality of frequency hypotheses results in the highest energy accumulation value.

System and method for narrowing the range of frequency uncertainty of a doppler shifted signal

The present invention is a method and apparatus for detecting the presence of or acquiring a signal in a data stream, where the signal has been spread using a pseudonoise sequence. The method comprises the steps of delaying a pseudonoise sequence by a plurality of predetermined delays to produce a plurality of delayed pseudonoise sequences, combining each of the delayed pseudonoise sequences with the data stream to produce a plurality of despread data streams, and accumulating each of the despread data streams for a preselected duration to produce a plurality of coherent sums. Each of the coherent sums are accumulated for a further duration to produce a plurality of non-coherent sums. The non-coherent sums are examined to determine the most likely PN offset hypothesis.

User terminal parallel searcher

A transceiver system for interfacing digital modems with radio frequency signals including an antenna, an antenna interface system and a modem interface system separated by a cable. The antenna is placed in a location having optimal reception and in close proximity to the antenna interface system. The cable couples the antenna interface system to the modem interface system. The modem interface system includes a two state variable attenuator and an attenuation register that are configured to either reduce the strength of the receive (Rx) signal when the modems are located near a base station, or to transmit the Rx signal without attenuation when the concentrated subscriber unit is at a more distant location. The outgoing, or transmit (Tx), signal is also attenuated in a similar manner to the incoming signal. A signal loss detection system includes a detector located in the modem interface system that receives an oscillating signal transmitted from the antenna interface system through the coaxial cable. A differentiating integrator then determines the amount of signal loss experienced by this oscillating signal during transmission through the coaxial cable and attenuates the signal from the antenna interface system accordingly so the amount of loss experienced remains constant. DC power is transmitted from the modem interface system to the antenna interface system through the coaxial cable. A maximum power limiting system detects when the signal being generated exceeds the capacity of the transmit power amplifier and transmits an alarm signal to the modem interface system.

Self-attenuating RF transceiver system using antenna and modem

A pulse density modulation circuit has a counter which produces a most significant bit through a least significant bit output based on a clock input. The circuit also has a comparator with two sets of most significant bit through least significant bit inputs that produces an output based on a comparison of the two sets of inputs. The first set of comparator most significant bit through least significant bit inputs receives respectively a most significant bit through a least significant bit of an input reference signal. The second set of comparator most significant bit through least significant bit inputs receives the counter most significant bit through least significant bit output in a non-sequential bit order. The non-sequential bit order can be a bit reversed order wherein the counter most significant bit through least significant bit output are respectively connected to the comparator least significant bit through most significant bit input. The circuit may further filter the comparator output to provide a resultant analog output signal.
