Described herein is a simple and versatile synthetic strategy for the preparation of metal-organic frameworks comprising a carbon matrix doped with nitrogen atoms, wherein transition metal ions are bonded to the carbon matrix via the nitrogen atoms. This strategy is applicable for the synthesis of single metal catalysts or multi metal catalysts rich with atomically dispersed metal active sites. The metal-organic frameworks provided herein have numerous application when used in fuel cells.

Atomically dispersed metal catalysts and applications thereof

Compositions are provided for efficient uranium extraction, for example from wastewater, seawater, or other water sources. The compositions can include a functionalized porous organic polymer functionalized with one or more uranium binding moieties, e.g. having a plurality of amidoxime or amidrazone groups covalently attached thereto. The compositions can include covalent organic frameworks, porous aromatic frameworks, and various porous organic polymers, especially those having a hierarchical pore size distribution over a range of pore sizes. The compositions can have functional groups such as amidoxime or an amidrazone covalently attached thereto. The hierarchical pore size distribution can be determined based upon at least 60% of the pore sizes in the range of pore sizes having a pore volume of at least 0.01 cmgin the pore size distribution at 77 K. Methods of making the compositions and methods of using the compositions are also provided.

Functionalized porous organic polymers as uranium nano-traps for efficient uranium extraction

A variety of superhyrdophobic porous materials are provided including a covalent organic framework having a plurality of perfluoroalkyl or perfluorheteroalkyl moieties covalently attached thereto. The materials can include a polymeric foam matrix made of a three-dimensional network of polymer fibers, and the covalent organic framework can be made encasing at least a portion of the polymer fibers. The covalent organic framework can be intertwined within the polymeric foam matrix such that the covalent organic framework encasing the portion of the polymer fibers is stable to mechanical compression of the polymeric foam matrix. Surfaces and other articles are provided including the superhyrdophobic porous materials are also provided, as are methods of making the superhyrdophobic porous materials, and methods of use for oil recovery among other things.

Superhydrophobic covalent organic framework materials

A variety of compositions and materials are provided for water purification and remediation. The compositions including multiple functionalities for treating a variety of pollutants or contaminants. The compositions can include a porous organic polymer with one or more of a variety of functional groups for binding the contaminants and with a hierarchical pore size distribution over a range of pore sizes to facilitate enhanced removal of the contaminants. Functional groups can include one, two, or more different functional groups such as amines, halides, ammoniums, pyridiuiums, thiols, imidazoliums, salts thereof, or others. The range of pore sizes can be about 1 nm to 10 nm or more. Contaminants can include antimony, arsenic, barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, selenium, technetium, thallium, uranium, radium, urea, and phosphate. Methods of removing the contaminants from water using the compositions are also provided.

Multifunctional porous materials for water purification and remediation

Described herein are corrole-based frameworks and methods for making the same. The corrole-based frameworks have unique structural and physical properties, which lends them to be versatile in a number of different applications and uses such as in gas storage/separation, proton conduction, biomedicine, sensing, and catalysis. In one aspect, the corrole-based frameworks are organic frameworks. In other aspects, the corrole-based frameworks are metal-organic frameworks.

Corrole-based frameworks and methods of use thereof

A variety of amphiphobic porous materials are provided. The materials can include a variety of porous frameworks that have an outer surface functionalized by a plurality of perfluoroalkyl moieties. By careful selection of appropriate perfluoralkyl moieties, hydrophobic properties can be imparted to the exterior surface of the porous materials without significantly impacting the wetting properties of the porous interior. This can be used to create a variety of highly amphiphobic porous materials. Methods of making and using the amphiphobic porous materials are also provided.

Amphiphobic porous materials

Compositions are provided for binding mercury based in porous organic polymers having (i) a plurality of repeat units having heavy metal chelator moieties covalently attached thereto and (ii) a plurality of pores having a hierarchical pore size distribution over a range of pore sizes. In some aspects, the range of pore sizes is about 5 nm to 10 nm. The compositions can have a maximum mercury uptake capacity of 1,000 mg gto 2,000 mg gat 1 atm and 296 K and has a mercury uptake capacity that is stable and recyclable. Methods of making the compositions and methods of using the compositions for uptake of mercury are also provided.

Mercury capture using functionalized porous organic polymer with hierarchical porosity

A method of preparing a nitrogen containing electrode catalyst by converting a high surface area metal-organic framework (MOF) material free of platinum group metals that includes a transition metal, an organic ligand, and an organic solvent via a high temperature thermal treatment to form catalytic active sites in the MOF. At least a portion of the contained organic solvent may be replaced with a nitrogen containing organic solvent or an organometallic compound or a transition metal salt to enhance catalytic performance. The electrode catalysts may be used in various electrochemical systems, including a proton exchange membrane fuel cell.

Non-platinum group metal electrocatalysts using metal organic framework materials and method of preparation

A method of preparing a nitrogen containing electrode catalyst by converting a high surface area metal-organic framework (MOF) material free of platinum group metals that includes a transition metal, an organic ligand, and an organic solvent via a high temperature thermal treatment to form catalytic active sites in the MOF. At least a portion of the contained organic solvent may be replaced with a nitrogen containing organic solvent or an organometallic compound or a transition metal salt to enhance catalytic performance. The electrode catalysts may be used in various electrochemical systems, including an alkaline fuel cell.

Compositions containing a porous organic polymer and a monovalent metal cation are provided for separation/purification of olefins and paraffins. The compositions can be stable and recyclable. The compositions can contain acidic functional group having monovalent metal cations associated therein. The monovalent metal cations can include Ag(I) and Cu(I), capable of strong cation-pi binding to ethylene and other olefins. The compositions can have a large surface area greater than about 20 m2/g. The compositions can be used to separate/purify mixtures of ethylene and ethane. The compositions can have an ethylene/ethane adsorption selectivity of about 20 to 500 at 296 K. Methods of making the compositions are provided. Methods can include synthesizing the porous organic polymer, grafting acidic functional groups onto the polymer, and cation exchange with a salt or acid of a monovalent metal cation. Methods of olefin/paraffin separation are provided capable of achieving purities over 99%.
