Residues from the distillation of a toluene diamine phosgenation mixture are hydrolyzed by mixing them with water and subjecting the mixture to a temperature of 200-350 &deg; C. The hydrolysis is performed in the presence of a sufficient amount of a base to maintain the pressure in the reactor to no more than a predetermined operating level. The product mixture is then extracted to recover TDA, which can be recycled. This provides an efficient process whereby nearly quantitative conversion of the residues to TDA can be achieved.

Polycarbamates of a polyisocyanate and secondary alcohols are disclosed. These carbamates are characterized in being readily pyrolyzed to form the corresponding polyisocyanate and alcohol with low formation of tars and other by-products. The catalyst systems can often be particularly useful for preparing polymer foams which have good heat resistivity and dimensional stability properties compared to conventionally formed foams. The ratio of the two components of the catalyst system, along with the amount of the catalyst system used to prepare a polymer formulation, can be adjusted such that the monocarboxylic acid component can react with isocyanate group containing compounds in the foam formulations to provide carbon dioxide to function as a sole blowing agent, or as a partial blowing agent used in conjunction with other conventional blowing agents.

A viscosity-stable polyisocyanate prepared by heating a polyisocyanate containing uretone imine groups and a catalyst under reaction conditions sufficient to produce compounds containing 2-imino-4,6-dioxohexahydro-s-triazine groups is disclosed. The polyisocyanate product so prepared may be used alone or blended with other polyisocyanates or diisocyanates to produce polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, polyamide and related polymers. These polymers, when used to prepare a foam, may exhibit improved dimensional stability and flammability. Also disclosed is a family of isocyanate compounds containing at least one 2-imino-4,6-dioxohexahydro-s-triazine group and having an isocyanate functionality of at least 4.

Disclosed are rigid polyurethane-polyisocyanurate foams prepared from polyisocyanates, polyols, trimer catalysts and a blowing agent mixture comprising (i) a halocarbon, and (ii) an organic carboxylic acid, and, optionally water. The foams have excellent aged K-factor values at fluorocarbon levels reduced by up to 75 percent over prior art materials.

Nitro-isopropenyldiphenyl ethers are provided which can serve as a useful source of known monomer intermediates or as intermediates for the preparation of nitro-haloisopropyl substituted diphenyl ethers. The latter have been discovered to act as facile alkylating agents with phenols providing nitro-p-hydroxyphenylisopropyl substituted diphenyl ethers. When the latter compounds are reduced there are obtained the corresponding amino-p-hydroxyphenylisopropyl substituted diphenyl ethers. The polymerization of this last class of compounds with acid halides provides polyamide-esters. The polymers can be used in the manufacture of such articles as tubing, hose, bellows hose, and the like.

Novel coating compositions are disclosed which comprise aqueous dispersions of polyamine resins in the form of their acid salts along with azetidinedione crosslinking agents and other optional adjuvants. The compositions give rise to improved methods for the electrodeposition of heat-curable films on substrates. The compositions and methods find particular utility in the cathodic deposition of coatings and films on automotive parts and household appliances.

Novel isocyanato-azetidinedione compounds are provided which have the formula ##STR1## wherein R and R.sub.1 can be independently selected from hydrogen and hydrocarbyl or can be joined together and along with the carbon to which they are attached represent a cycloalkane residue having 4 to 6 ring carbon atoms, y is an integer from 1 to 7 and X is a hydrocarbon radical having a valency of y plus one. The monoisocyanate compounds are used as intermediates to provide further novel azetidinedione containing derivatives in the form of azetidinedione-isocyanurates (II) and azetidinedione-urethanes (III). All three classes of compounds can be employed as acid scavenging agents for stabilizing various kinds of halogenated polymer systems. Notably, (I) and (III) form highly useful polyamide-polyureas and polyamide-polyurethanes respectively by reaction with organic polyamines.

Tris-azetidinedione derivative 1,3,5-triazin-2,4,6-triones

Novel polyamide block copolymers are provided which comprise a central block of a soft segment derived from the residue of a polymeric polyol or polyamine joined to terminal hard segment polyamide blocks. The linkages which join the blocks are of a novel type and are the opened form of certain bis azetidine-2,4-dione rings. The block copolymers can be prepared very rapidly via anionically polymerizing lactams on to prepolymer soft segments containing terminal azetidine-2,4-dione rings. The speed with which the polymerizations can be carried out make the block copolymers particularly useful for the RIM preparation of molded parts.
