An instrument tracker includes a case having an interior and exterior with a plurality of instrument seats, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and a controller. The IMU and controller are arranged within the interior of the case and the controller is disposed in communication with the IMU and is responsive to instructions recorded on a memory to receive position information from the IMU, determine at least one of position and orientation of an instrument fixed relative to the case by the plurality of instrument seats using the position information received from the IMU, and transmit the at least one of position and orientation to a display device for displaying position and orientation of the instrument relative to a predetermined insertion path through a subject between an entry point on the surface of the subject and a region of interest within the interior of the subject. Instrument tracking systems and methods tracking position of instruments are also described.

Systems, method and devices for assisting or performing guiding interventional procedures using inertial measurement units and magnetometer sensors

A training system and method includes a subject phantom () capable of being visualized on a display (). A spatial tracking system () is configured to track an interventional instrument () in subject phantom space. A simulation system () is configured to generate a simulated abnormality in the phantom space and to simulate interactions with the simulated abnormality to provide feedback and evaluation information to a user for training the user in an associated procedure related to the abnormality.

Tumor ablation training system

Prostate biopsy systems are provided that include a 3D ultrasound probe support configured to receive an ultrasound probe for transperineal imaging. One or more template grids can have a plurality of apertures extending therethrough to receive and guide a biopsy needle along a trajectory associated with respective apertures when the template grid is fixed to the support and the biopsy system is positioned in the perineal area of a patient. Patient-specific template grids can also be developed and produced. This system enables fully transperineal prostate biopsy (i.e. both imaging and needle placement are perineal) and eliminates the need for an external racking device for image fusion as well as needle tracking. In addition, it reduces the infection risk associated to transrectal approach.

A system and method for integrating diagnosis and treatment for internal tissues includes imaging () at least a portion of an internal organ of a subject using a first technology capable of differentiating tissue types, and targeting () and accessing biopsy sites using images of the first technology fused with images of a second technology capable of real-time image updates. System and method for probabilistic ablation planning

Methods and systems for diagnosing cancer in the prostate and other organs are disclosed. Exemplary methods comprises extracting texture information from MRI imaging data for a target organ, sometimes using two or more different imaging modalities. Texture features are determined that are indicative of cancer by identifying frequent texture patterns. A classification model is generated based on the determined texture features that are indicative of cancer, and diagnostic cancer prediction information for the target organ is then generated to help diagnose cancer in the organ.

Automated cancer detection using MRI

A method for interventional navigation using 3D contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) imaging includes acquiring a reference 3D CEUS volume and tracking information during a useful lifetime of a contrast enhancement agent administered to the anatomy. Real-time tracked tissue images are acquired during the interventional procedure. In addition, a corresponding CEUS multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) for at least one of the acquired real-time tracked tissue images is generated. At least one of the acquired real-time tracked tissue images is displayed along with the corresponding CEUS MPR. The displayed real-time tracked tissue image includes at least an image of the instrument within the desired portion of the anatomy and the CEUS MPR corresponds to the displayed real-time tracked tissue image. Thus, the contrast enhanced image information and tissue image information are concurrently display for the interventional navigation at least subsequent to the expiration of the contrast enhancement useful lifetime.

Interventional navigation using 3D contrast-enhanced ultrasound

A therapy planning and image guidance and navigation for an interventional procedure are combined in one system. The system includes: a radio frequency ablation therapy planning component () capable of creating an initial treatment plan, adjusting the treatment plan to take into account data received during a procedure and transferring a treatment plan to a navigation component, a navigation system component () to guide an ablation probe () and a feedback sub-system () for determining actual ablation probe positions/orientations and actual ablation size/shape via imaging () and/or tracking () systems, and enabling exchange of information between the planning component and the navigation component. By combining and integrating procedure planning and navigation, and by providing feedback from the navigation component back to the planning component about actual electrode position and orientation and ablation volume, complex procedures can be carried out more accurately, efficiently, and potentially with better clinical outcomes.

Feedback system for integrating interventional planning and navigation

A 3D ultrasound image from a memory is compared with a 3D diagnostic image from a memory by a localizer and registration unit which determines a baseline transform which registers the 3D diagnostic and ultrasound volume images. The target region continues to be examined by an ultrasound scanner which generates a series of real-time 2D or 3D ultrasound or other lower resolution images. The localizer and registration unit compares one or a group of the 2D ultrasound images with the 3D ultrasound image to determine a motion correction transform. An image adjustment processor or program (operates on the 3D diagnostic volume image with the baseline transform and the motion correction transform, to generate a motion corrected image that is displayed on an appropriate display.

Closed loop registration control for multi-modality soft tissue imaging

A method () for quantitative 3D contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) analysis includes acquiring () an initial pair of ultrasound contrast and tissue images of an anatomy. A region of interest (ROI) or volume of interest (VOI) is established () in the initial acquired tissue image, which becomes the baseline tissue image. The established ROI/VOI is automatically registered () from the initial tissue image to the initial contrast image, which becomes a baseline contrast image. Quantitative analysis is performed () on the ROI/VOI of the baseline contrast image. The method further includes acquiring () a next ultrasound contrast and tissue image pair, corresponding to an i th current contrast and tissue image pair. Frame-to-frame registration is established () between (i) the current tissue image and (ii) the baseline tissue image, the frame-to-frame registration being used () between the current tissue image and the baseline tissue image to transfer the ROI/VOI from (i) the baseline contrast image to (ii) the current contrast image, thereby creating a transformed ROI/VOI in the current contrast image. Quantitative analysis is then performed () on the transformed ROI/VOI of the current contrast image.

A method and system for performing biopsies can include an imaging system for obtaining diagnostic images of a target region; a tracking system; a probe having a deployable biopsy needle for performing a biopsy procedure where the tracking system generates tracking information for at least one of the probe and the biopsy needle; an ultrasound imaging system for obtaining ultrasound imaging of the target region; and a computer in communication with the tracking system, the imaging system and the ultrasound imaging system. The computer can register the tracking system with the imaging system. The computer transfers a marking of a biopsy site associated with the biopsy procedure from the ultrasound imaging to the diagnostic images based on the tracking information and the registration of the tracking system with the diagnostic images.
