Methods include making EM measurements on a single logging run while drilling using an EM tool on a tool string in a substantially horizontally aligned section of the borehole at a plurality of borehole depths; estimating, at each of the plurality of borehole depths, a true resistivity of a volume of interest of the formation in which the tool sits in substantially real time while on the single logging run while drilling.

Real-time true resistivity estimation for logging-while-drilling tools

Systems, methods, and devices for evaluation of an earth formation intersected by a borehole using a logging tool. Tools include sensor assemblies with permanent magnets mounted at a first radial distance from an axis of rotation of the sensor assembly, as well as receiver sensors. The sensor assembly is configured to generate an alternating current in a volume of interest of the formation surrounding the borehole with a time varying magnetic field in the volume produced by rotating the sensor assembly about the axis of rotation. Methods include making EM signal measurements or magnetic field measurements with receiver sensors responsive to the alternating current and estimating at least a formation property of the volume using the measurements.

Method and apparatus of near-bit resistivity for looking-ahead

Systems, devices, and methods for evaluating an earth formation. Methods include conveying a tool on a carrier in a borehole, the tool comprising a conducting tubular having a transmitter and receivers disposed thereon in a spaced-apart relationship; inducing a current in the earth formation using the transmitter; measuring with the first receiver a first time-dependent transient electromagnetic (TEM) signal induced by the formation responsive to the current; measuring with a second receiver a second time-dependent TEM signal induced by the formation responsive to the current; and using at least one processor to estimate a corrected time-dependent TEM signal using the first time-dependent TEM signal, the second time-dependent TEM signal, and a correction coefficient estimated as a function of a non-exponentiated ratio of distances rand rbetween the transmitter and the respective receivers.

Systems, devices, and methods for evaluating an earth formation. Apparatus include an electrically conducting tubular; at least one transmitter configured to propagate an electromagnetic field in the earth formation; and at least one receiver configured to receive an electromagnetic signal resulting from interaction of an electromagnetic field with said earth formation. The at least one transmitter and at least one receiver may employ antenna assemblies comprising: a recess in the conducting tubular defined by at least one radially extending surface substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the conducting tubular and non-radially extending surfaces; an antenna in the recess; and conductive shielding, the conductive shielding having a conductivity significantly more than a conductivity of the conducting tubular and covering the whole of each of the plurality of radially extending surfaces.

Downhole deep transient measurements with improved sensors

Methods and apparatus for determining at least one parameter of interest of an earth formation. Methods include using at least one transmitter to initiate at a single location in the formation a first electromagnetic signal at a first frequency and a second electromagnetic signal at a second frequency different than the first frequency for propagation through the formation; receiving the first electromagnetic signal propagating through the formation and the second electromagnetic signal propagating through the formation at a single receiver non-collocated with the at least one transmitter; estimating a relative phase shift of the second electromagnetic signal relative to the first electromagnetic signal; estimating a relative attenuation of the second electromagnetic signal relative to the first electromagnetic signal; using the relative attenuation and the relative phase shift to estimate a parameter of interest of the formation. The receiver may be unsynchronized with respect to the transmitter.

An apparatus for estimating at least one parameter of interest of an earth formation includes a first sub and a second sub positioned along the conveyance device. The first sub and the second sub cooperate to generate at least one main component measurement and only the second sub is configured to generate at least one cross-component measurement. A method includes conveying a first sub and a second sub along a wellbore formed in the earth formation using a conveyance device, using the first sub and the second sub to generate at least one main component measurement, and using only the second sub to generate at least one cross-component measurement.

In one aspect an apparatus for determining a distance between a first borehole and a second borehole during drilling of the second borehole is disclosed that in one embodiment includes a magnet on a drilling tool that rotates in the second borehole to induce a primary magnetic field in a magnetic object in the first borehole, a substantially stationary sensor on the drilling tool that detects a secondary magnetic field from the magnetic object responsive to the induced primary magnetic field, and a controller that determines the distance between the first borehole and the second borehole from the detected magnetic field. In another aspect a method of determining a distance between a first borehole and a second borehole, the in one embodiment includes inducing a primary magnetic field in a magnetic object in the first borehole using a rotating magnet in the second borehole, detecting a secondary magnetic field from the magnetic object responsive to the induced primary magnetic field using a substantially stationary sensor in the second borehole, and determining the distance between the first borehole and the second borehole from the detected magnetic field.

Apparatus and methods for well-bore proximity measurement while drilling

An antenna system for a downhole tool has an antenna that is configured to operate at a plurality of frequencies. The tuning circuit is on the interior of the tool and shielded from borehole fluids. The tuning circuit is coupled to the antenna by a transformer circuit.

In aspects, an apparatus for use in a wellbore for determining a property of an earth formation is provided. The apparatus, in one embodiment, may include a tool body including a transmitter configured to induce electromagnetic waves in an earth formation, a receiver configured to provide signals responsive to the induced electromagnetic waves, a conductive member between the transmitter and the receiver extending radially from the tool body and configured to reduce propagation of eddy currents between the transmitter and the receiver when the tool body is in a wellbore and a processor configured to process the signals provided by the receiver to determine the property of the earth formation.
