The present disclosure provides fibrous composition comprising a soluble or a dispersible N-halamine, for example 1-chloro-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-4-imidazolidinone (i.e., compound I). Additionally, the disclosure provides methods for producing the fibrous compositions comprising a soluble or a dispersible N-halamine as well as methods for protecting a person from an infection using the fibrous compositions comprising a soluble or a dispersible N-halamine. The compositions and methods according to the present disclosure provide several advantages, such as stability, less time to provide sufficient antimicrobial inactivation, and are inexpensive and require lower amount of active concentrations to be effective.

N-halamine containing fibrous compositions and uses thereof

A disinfecting, nonbleaching N-halamine for use in contact lens soaking solutions. The N-halamine compound is soluble in water and contact lens formulation solutions to the extent necessary to provide disinfection, but not to cause significant bleaching of dye materials incorporated into the contact lenses.

Disinfecting, nonbleaching N-halamine for use with contact lens

N-halaminehydantoinyl epoxide compounds which can be used for the construction of coatings and materials which can be rendered biocidal by exposure to halogen solutions either before or after curing the coating or material are disclosed. The biocidal coatings and materials can then be used to inactivate pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and yeasts, as well as virus particles, which can cause infectious diseases, and those microorganisms which cause noxious odors and unpleasant coloring such as mildew. The coatings are compatible with a variety of substrates including, but not limited to, cellulose, chitin, chitosan, synthetic fibers, cement grout, latex caulk, acrylic films, polyurethanes, plastics and paints.

Biocidal N-halamine epoxides

Methylated polystyrene having pendant N-halamine and N-halamine precursor groups. Biocidal particles have been prepared by reacting highly crosslinked methylated polystyrene beads as starting materials with various N-halamine precursor compounds. The resulting polymer beads are halogenated with chlorine or bromine. The porous beads will be useful in disinfection applications as well as for sanitization and controlling noxious odor when mixed with absorbent materials in items such as disposable diapers, infant swimwear, incontinence pads, bandages, sanitary napkins, pantiliners, mattress covers, shoe inserts, sponges, animal litter, carpets, and fabrics.

Biocidal particles of methylated polystyrene

Porous, permeable particles of meta-aramid can be chlorinated or brominated to produce antimicrobial and detoxifying particles for use in applications such as, but not limited to, nonwoven webs, paper, textiles, absorbent articles, healthcare products, paints, filter materials, powder coatings, clear coatings, molded plastic articles, binders for fibrous materials, and the like. The particles can be charged with halogen before or after incorporation into the application medium. The particles can contain blends of meta-aramid with other polymers such as, but not limited to, cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyurethane, and the like. The particles will be effective at inactivation of pathogenic and odor-causing microorganisms and toxic chemical agents. The particles, which contain N-halamine units, have unexpected resistance to ultraviolet light degradation.

Disinfecting and detoxifying meta-aramid particles

Novel acrylamide and methacrylamide hydantoin monomers which can be reacted with other acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylate, and methacrylate monomers to form copolymers, which upon halogenation, provide oxidative coatings which are biocidal for use with various materials including, but not limited to, textiles, filters, and latex paints.

N-halamine compounds which contain hindered amine and amide functional groups. Compounds include wherein X, X', and X&#x2033; independently are H, Cl, or Br, wherein no more than two of X, X&#x2032;, and X&#x2033; are H and wherein R, R&#x2032;, and R&#x2033; are independently alkyl groups containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms or hydrogen, and X and X&#x2032; are independently H, Cl, or Br. Compositions comprising the compounds are also described. The compounds and/or compositions can be used, for example, for the purpose of constructing biocidal coatings and materials. The biocidal activity can inactivate pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and yeasts, as well as, virus particles.

Biocidal siloxane coating material containing N-halogenated amine and amide functional groups

Heterocyclic and acyclic silane monomers and siloxane polymers, and their halogenated derivatives, are provided for the purpose of functionalizing surfaces or materials so as to render them biocidal upon exposure to oxidative halogen solutions. The biocidal function can be imparted either before or after bonding or adhesion to the surface or material. The biocidal surfaces and materials can then be used to inactivate pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and yeasts, as well as virus particles, which can cause infectious diseases, and those microorganisms which cause noxious odors and unpleasant coloring such as mildew. Examples of surfaces and materials which can be rendered biocidal in this invention include, but are not limited to, cellulose, chitin, chitosan, synthetic fibers, glass, ceramics, plastics, rubber, cement grout, latex caulk, porcelain, acrylic films, vinyl, polyurethanes, silicon tubing, marble, metals, metal oxides, and silica.

N-halamine siloxanes for use in biocidal coatings and materials

Method for preparing biocidal halogenated polystyrene hydantoins. The biocidal polymers poly-1,3-dichloro-5-methyl-5-(4'-vinylphenyl)hydantoin, poly-1,3-dibromo-5-methyl-5-(4&#x2032;-vinylphenyl)hydantoin, and their monohalogenated alkali metal salts and protonated derivatives have been prepared as porous beads by use of highly crosslinked polystyrene beads as starting materials. The porous beads will be useful in water and air disinfection applications when employed in cartridge filters and carafes (for water), as well as for controlling noxious odor when mixed with absorbent materials in items such as disposable diapers, incontinence pads, bandages, sanitary napkins, pantiliners, mattress covers, shoe inserts, sponges, animal litter, carpets, fabrics, and air filters or the like.

N-halamine biocidal materials and coatings are provided. Monomeric oxazolidinones or hydantoins are homopolymerized or copolymerized with other monomers so as to produce materials or coatings, which upon exposure to solutions of chlorine or bromine become biocidal. The biocidal materials and coatings are effective at inactivating microorganisms upon surface contact and are regenerable following loss of efficacy upon further exposure to solutions of chlorine or bromine. Surfaces which could be treated with the materials and coatings include, but are not limited to: glass, plastic, metals, fibers, and wood for use in pool and tank liners, food wrappers, catheters, paints, tiles, shower walls, fabrics, sterile bandages, pipes, medical and dental coatings, preservatives, and the like.

Surface active N-Halamine compounds

Cyclic amine monomers and polymers and N-halamine biocidal polymer compounds are provided. Methods of making and using the same wherein the functional groups unhalogenated or halogenated hydantoins, triazine diones, imidazolidinones, and pyrimidinones are substituted onto inexpensive polymer units such as polystyrene, polyethylene, and modified polymethacrylamide are provided. The cyclic amine monomers and polymers can be utilized to form the biocidal N-halamine polymers. These N-halamine polymers are stable, insoluble biocides which release only small amounts of free halogen and other impurities. They can be useful as disinfectants for potable water, swimming pools, hot tubs, industrial water systems, cooling towers, air-conditioning systems, gas streams, paints, oils, ointments, fabrics, rubber materials, sterile bandages, coatings, hard surfaces, liners of containers, and the like.

Monomeric and polymeric cyclic amine and N-halamine compounds

Cyclic N-halamine biocidal monomers and polymers and methods of using the same as biocides, wherein the functional group, halogenated oxazolidinones, may be homo- and copolymerized, are provided. The copolymerizations are effected with inexpensive monomers such as acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, and the like. Grafting reactions were also accomplished with the N-halamine monomers and commercial polymers such as poly-acrylonitrile, poly-styrene, poly-vinyl acetate, poly-vinyl alcohol, poly-vinyl chloride, and cellulose. These N-halamine compounds are stable biocides which release small amounts of free halogen and other impurities. They will be useful as disinfectants for swimming pools, oil and water based paints, preservatives, medical and dental coatings, industrial and commercial coatings, fabrics, sterile bandages, liners of containers, and the like.
