A method that includes providing a lens having a first side, a second side, and an anti-reflective or mirror coating on the first side; depositing a heat-curable coating on the second side of the lens; and heating the heat-curable coating without damaging the anti-reflective or mirror coating. Another method that includes providing a non-pure polycarbonate lens having a first side, a second side, and a first coating on the first side; depositing a heat-curable coating on the second side of the lens; and heating the heat-curable coating without damaging the first coating. Other methods are also disclosed.

A method is disclosed for imparting impact resistance to a plastic ophthalmic lens. The method consists of applying a coating of a multifunctional acrylate in a solvent mixture to the back surface of the lens, and curing the multifunctional acrylate to form an impact resistance imparting coat. The multifunctional acrylate preferably has at least about 40%, by weight, of a difunctional acrylate. The multifunctional acrylate preferably has a glass transition temperature less than about 60.degree. C. Lenses with an impact resistance imparting coat on the back, and an abrasion resistant coat on at least the front of the lens, are also disclosed.
