Embodiments for scaling services in a distributed network by registering bucket names for the services with a Domain Name Service (DNS) server. Buckets hold resources and distribution of buckets to servers is maintained using a Consistent Hashing Ring. Upon determining that services servers need to be added or deleted based on changes load conditions, leave/join events are managed by a Kubernetes event service and updates are propagated to all of the services by the membership service component. A service scaling process updates the mapping of buckets to the host name of the new service server. A resource request from a client is sent to the mapped bucket name, and a DNS resolver process sends it to the changed service server so that the client is completely unaware of this change in bucket ownership.

Scaling of services in a distributed system

Embodiments for simulating timing-related error conditions in a distributed system, by allowing a user to define a fault map specifying one or more faults to be committed by components in the distributed system. These generated fault events are to be executed in different components of the distributed system in a serialized distributed order. An event injection process delivers the fault map messages to the nodes in the distributed system, and the nodes then execute an operation sequence containing the fault events in the proper order as coordinated by the event injection process. The faults are then committed by the associated components in the nodes. Execution of these fault events occurs before, after or during a regular component procedure or action to simulate the desired timing-related error.

Embodiments for managing access to Mtrees using a mechanism through the use of net groups that contain a pool of IP addresses with configuration information that is automatically propagated to new nodes as they are added to a defined net group to facilitate zero configuration when scaling a network. Using net groups, access to an Mtree across nodes in a data center or similar network can be managed with a group of IP addresses spread across all the nodes in the cluster as a single net group entity. The net group provides flexibility to create multiple net groups that can be used to manage the appliance in management, diagnostic, data, and interconnect domains. It allows flexibility to manage the access to Mtree from different networks and security domains, and allows a user to configure the network attributes of all the IP addresses as a single entity.
