A pigmented phase change ink composition comprising an ink vehicle, a dispersant, and pigment particles wherein the dispersant is a chemical compound of formula: wherein Ris an alkyl group, aryl group, alkylaryl group or arylalkyl group with at least 23 carbon atoms, Ris an alkylene group, arylene group, alkylarylene group or arylalkylene group with at least 2 carbons and X is a quaternary ammonium salt. The ink can be resistant to substantial aggregation and settling of the pigment particles in the melt and even when exposed to freeze thaw cycles.

Methods, apparatuses, and systems for manufacturing a hot melt adhesive containing an adhesion promoter in a continuous mode include supplying a melted, hot melt adhesive to a mixing device at a first predetermined rate while simultaneously supplying an adhesion promoter to the same mixing device at a second predetermined rate to form a homogeneous admixture containing the hot melt adhesive and adhesion promoter. The hot melt adhesive/adhesion promoter mixture is subsequently reacted in at least one tubular reactor at a predetermined temperature for a predetermined residence time to allow the adhesion promoter to chemically bond with the hot melt adhesive and form an adhesive-promoter-treated hot melt adhesive. The adhesion-promoter-treated hot melt adhesive is collected in a product receiver and may be further processed.

Method, apparatus and system for preparing adhesive-promoter-treated hot melt adhesives in continuous mode

A wax emulsion comprised of polyethylene wax and one or more surfactants in an aqueous medium, wherein the polyethylene wax has a degree of crystallinity of from about 50% to about 80% by weight of the polyethylene wax, is provided. The wax emulsion is made by emulsifying the polyethylene wax, one or more surfactants and an aqueous medium in a vessel at a temperature at or above the melting point of the polyethylene wax to form an emulsified product, and subsequently cooling the emulsified product to ambient temperature at a cooling rate of at least 10&#xb0; C. per minute. The wax emulsion is preferably incorporated into toner particles prepared by emulsion/aggregation/coalescing.

The presently disclosed embodiments are directed to processes for making phase change or solid ink used in ink jet system recording apparatuses (e.g., printer, copying machine, facsimile, word processor, plotter, and the like). More particularly, the embodiments pertain to the preparation of pigment or dye-based solid ink using a rotor-stator style, in-line homogenizer.

Disclosed is a process for preparing a phase change ink composition which comprises (a) a phase change ink carrier, said carrier comprising at least one nonpolar component and at least one polar component, and (b) pigment particles, said process comprising (1) selecting at least one of the polar carrier components to be a pigment particle dispersant; (2) admixing the pigment particles with the dispersant; (3) extruding the mixture of pigment particles and dispersant in an extruder at a temperature that is at or above about the peak crystallization temperature of the dispersant and below about the peak melting temperature of the dispersant, thereby forming a pigment dispersion; (4) subsequent to extrusion of the pigment dispersion, adding to the pigment dispersion any remaining polar components and the nonpolar component; and (5) subjecting the resulting mixture of pigment dispersion, polar component, and nonpolar component to high shear mixing to form an ink.

Disclosed is a process which comprises (a) reacting allyl bromide with diethyl amine in a molar ratio of at least about 1 mole of allyl bromide per about 1.15 moles of diethyl amine and in a molar ratio of no more than about 1 mole of allyl bromide per about 2 moles of diethyl amine, thereby generating allyl diethyl amine in a monomer reaction mixture; (b) subsequently filtering the monomer reaction mixture to remove impurities; (c) subsequently reacting the allyl diethyl amine with allyl bromide, thereby generating solid diallyl diethyl ammonium bromide; (d) subsequently isolating the solid diallyl diethyl ammonium bromide; (e) subsequently dissolving the diallyl diethyl ammonium bromide in a solvent and adding thereto a polymerization initiator to form a polymerization reaction mixture; (f) subsequently heating the polymerization reaction mixture in a vessel equipped with a reflux condenser to a temperature of from about 90 to about 100&deg; C., thereby generating poly(diallyl diethyl ammonium bromide); and (g) subsequently optionally isolating the poly(diallyl diethyl ammonium bromide) from the polymerization reaction mixture.

A process for the preparation of microsynthetic carrier comprising the melting of a mixture of binder resin, magnetic component, colorant and optionally charge control additive, thereby forming a polymer melt, and mixing said mixture in a melt mixing device, cooling and pelletizing said mixture, and thereafter grinding and classifying said pellets.

Low fix temperature toners are fabricated by a two step melt mixing and reactive melt mixing process wherein there is initially prepared, for example, using a melt mixing device, a composite of pigment and resin, followed by crosslinking of the resin component at high temperature and high shear to produce a partially crosslinked toner with substantially no unpigmented gel domains. The toners are particularly suitable for high speed fusing, show excellent offset resistance and wide fusing latitude, and superior vinyl offset properties.

A low melt, high gloss toner resin with low minimum fix temperature, wide fusing latitude and wide gloss latitude contains a linear portion and 1 to 10 percent by weight of a crosslinked portion containing high density, crosslinked microgel particles, but substantially free of low density, crosslinked polymer. The resin is particularly suitable for high gloss applications, such as process color and color transparencies, and for high speed fusing, shows excellent offset resistance, wide fusing latitude, wide gloss latitude and superior vinyl offset properties. The resin may be formed by reactive melt mixing.

A method for making conductive toner particles includes (A) heat treating in fluidized bed processing equipment a mixture of non-conductive toner particles containing a thermoplastic resin and a colorant, and an effective amount of conductive powder blended with and coated on surfaces of the non-conductive toner particles, wherein the heat treatment is carried out at a temperature at or above the glass transition temperature of the resin for a period of time at least sufficient to fuse the conductive powder onto the surfaces of the non-conductive toner particles, and then (B) cooling the heated conductive toner particles to a temperature below the glass transition temperature of the resin. The final toner particles have a conductivity of at least about 10.sup.-8 ohm.sup.-1 -cm.sup.-1 and preferably from about 10.sup.-4 to about 10.sup.-8 ohm.sup.-1 -cm.sup.-1.
